Vehicle: 2022 Kia Sportage SX Prestige

Hi all,

I'm getting a 'Blind Spot Monitor Malfunction' warning light on my dashboard for my 2022 Kia Sportage SX Prestige. It popped up a couple of days ago and hasn't gone away. The system doesn't seem to be working at all, which is a bit concerning since I rely on it for lane changes.

I've checked the sensors in the rear bumper for any obvious obstructions or damage, but they look clean. I also tried turning the system off and on through the infotainment menu, but the warning persists. Has anyone else experienced this with their newer Sportage? Could it be a faulty sensor or something more complex with the radar unit? Any advice is welcome!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system is a crucial safety feature, and a 'Malfunction' warning on your 2022 Kia Sportage SX Prestige indicates a significant issue that needs attention. These systems typically use radar sensors located in the rear bumper to detect vehicles in your blind spots.

Common Causes for BSM Malfunction:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Damage: While you've checked for obvious issues, even minor dirt, ice, or a subtle impact that misaligns a sensor can cause a malfunction. The sensors are very sensitive.
  2. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to the BSM sensors or control module can disrupt communication and lead to errors.
  3. Faulty BSM Sensor: One or both of the radar sensors themselves could be defective and require replacement.
  4. BSM Control Module Failure: The central module that processes the sensor data could be faulty.
  5. Software Glitch: Less common for a persistent warning, but a software bug in the BSM system or related modules could occur.
  6. Low Battery Voltage: Sometimes, transient electrical issues due to low battery voltage can trigger various system warnings, though this is usually accompanied by other symptoms.

Diagnostics & When to See a Shop:

  1. Visual Inspection: Re-inspect the rear bumper area where the BSM sensors are located. Ensure there's no mud, snow, or damage. Even a small sticker or paint chip over the sensor area can interfere.
  2. Check for Recalls/TSBs: Occasionally, manufacturers issue technical service bulletins (TSBs) or recalls for known issues with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

Since the warning is persistent and the system is not functioning, it's highly recommended to take your Sportage to a Kia dealership or a reputable shop equipped with advanced diagnostic tools. They can:

  • Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The BSM system will store specific B-codes or C-codes (e.g., B1600, C1611) that pinpoint the exact sensor or module causing the issue.
  • Perform Sensor Calibration: After any repair or replacement of a BSM sensor, it often requires precise calibration using specialized equipment to ensure accurate operation.
  • Inspect Wiring and Connections: Technicians can thoroughly check the integrity of the wiring harness and connectors.

Attempting to fix this yourself without the proper tools can be difficult and may not resolve the underlying problem. For your safety and the proper functioning of your ADAS, professional diagnosis is the best course of action.
