Vehicle: 2022 Kia Telluride SX

My 2022 Kia Telluride SX has been giving me headaches with its infotainment system. It frequently freezes up, becoming completely unresponsive to touch or button presses. Sometimes it reboots itself, but other times I have to turn the car off and on again to get it working.

On top of that, Apple CarPlay is incredibly unreliable. It disconnects randomly, or sometimes won't connect at all. I've tried different cables and even different iPhones, but the problem persists. It's really frustrating when I rely on it for navigation and music.

Is this a common issue with the Telluride's larger screen system? What can I do to troubleshoot this before taking it to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches, especially with connectivity features like Apple CarPlay, can be incredibly frustrating in modern vehicles. While the Kia Telluride is generally well-regarded, software and hardware interactions can sometimes lead to these issues.

  1. Software Updates: The most common fix for infotainment freezing and connectivity problems is a software update. Kia frequently releases updates for their infotainment systems to improve stability, fix bugs, and enhance compatibility. Check the Kia Owners portal or ask your dealer if your system has the latest firmware.

  2. Troubleshooting CarPlay/Android Auto:

    • Cables: Even though you've tried different cables, ensure they are high-quality, MFi-certified (for Apple) or reputable brand cables, and are short (under 3 feet). Cheap or long cables can cause data transfer issues.
    • Phone Settings: Ensure your phone's operating system is up to date. Try resetting network settings on your phone. For CarPlay, ensure Siri is enabled.
    • Vehicle Settings: In your Telluride's infotainment settings, try deleting and re-pairing your phone. Also, check for any specific CarPlay/Android Auto settings that might need adjustment.
  3. System Reset: Many infotainment systems have a small reset button (sometimes a tiny pinhole) or a menu option to perform a soft reset. Consult your owner's manual for instructions on how to do this for your specific system. This can often clear temporary glitches.

When to See a Shop:

  • If software updates, cable changes, and system resets don't resolve the issue, it's time to visit your Kia dealership.
  • The problem could be a faulty USB port, a defective head unit, or a deeper electrical issue.
  • Document the issues thoroughly: when they occur, how often, and any error messages. This will help the technician diagnose the problem more efficiently.
  • Mention if the issue occurs with both CarPlay and Android Auto (if you've tested both), as this can help narrow down whether it's a phone-specific or vehicle-specific problem.
