Vehicle: 2022 Kia Telluride SX Prestige

Hello Kia community,

I'm experiencing some frustrating issues with the infotainment system in my 2022 Kia Telluride SX Prestige. The large screen occasionally flickers, sometimes goes completely black for a second or two, and has frozen a few times, requiring me to restart the car to get it working again.

It seems to happen randomly, not tied to any specific app or function. Apple CarPlay also disconnects sometimes when this happens. It's really annoying, especially when I'm relying on navigation. The car only has about 25,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else with a newer Telluride had similar problems? Is there a known software update or a common electrical issue that could cause this? Any advice would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system issues like flickering, freezing, and black screens on a 2022 Kia Telluride SX Prestige can be quite disruptive, especially given the vehicle's advanced technology. These problems often point to software glitches, connectivity issues, or, in some cases, hardware faults within the head unit or related modules.

Possible Causes:

  1. Software Glitch/Bug: Modern infotainment systems are complex computers. A software bug or corrupted firmware can cause erratic behavior, freezing, and display issues. Kia frequently releases software updates to address such problems.
  2. Loose or Corroded Connections: The infotainment unit relies on numerous electrical connections. A loose power cable, data cable, or ground wire behind the dashboard can lead to intermittent power loss or signal disruption, causing flickering or freezing.
  3. Overheating: While less common, if the infotainment unit or a related module overheats, it can cause performance issues and temporary shutdowns.
  4. Faulty Head Unit: The infotainment head unit itself might have an internal hardware defect, leading to the observed symptoms.
  5. USB Port/Cable Issues (for CarPlay): If Apple CarPlay disconnects frequently, it could be related to a faulty USB port or a poor-quality USB cable, though the screen flickering suggests a broader issue.

Diagnostics & Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Soft Reset: Many Kia infotainment systems have a small reset button (often a tiny pinhole) near the volume knob or screen. Use a paperclip to press and hold it for 5-10 seconds. This can resolve minor software glitches.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Visit your Kia dealer or check the official Kia infotainment update portal (if available for your region) to see if there's a newer software version for your Telluride. Updates often fix known bugs.
  3. Inspect USB Cables: If CarPlay is disconnecting, try a different, high-quality Apple-certified USB cable. Also, inspect the USB port for debris or damage.
  4. Check Vehicle Battery Health: While less direct, a weak or fluctuating vehicle battery can sometimes cause erratic behavior in sensitive electronics. Ensure your 12V battery is in good health.

When to See a Shop:

Given that your 2022 Kia Telluride is still relatively new and likely under warranty, the best course of action for persistent flickering and freezing is to schedule an appointment with your Kia dealership. They have access to specific diagnostic tools to: * Check for any internal diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the infotainment system (these are often manufacturer-specific and not standard OBD-II codes). * Perform comprehensive software updates. * Inspect all wiring connections behind the dashboard. * Determine if the head unit or a related module (e.g., navigation module) needs replacement. Attempting to disassemble the dashboard yourself could void your warranty or cause further damage.
