2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige: Key Fob Not Detected, Push Button Start Issues

Vehicle: 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige

I'm having a weird problem with my 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige. Sometimes when I try to start it, I get a 'Key Fob Not Detected' message on the dash, even though the fob is right there in the cup holder or my pocket. I have to hold the fob right up to the start button for it to work.

I've replaced the battery in the fob, and it's still happening intermittently. Both fobs are doing it, which makes me think it's not just a bad fob battery. It's really inconvenient, especially when I'm in a hurry.

Is this a known issue with the Telluride? Could it be interference, or something more serious with the smart key system itself? Any suggestions on what to check?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Key Fob Not Detected' message, especially when both fobs exhibit the issue and after replacing batteries, points towards a problem with the vehicle's smart key system rather than the fobs themselves. This is a common concern for push-button start vehicles.

  1. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Fob Battery (Re-check): Even though you replaced it, ensure you used a fresh, high-quality CR2032 battery and that it's inserted correctly. Sometimes new batteries can be faulty.
    • Fob Placement: While you know to place it near the start button, try different locations within the cabin during normal operation to see if there's a specific 'dead zone'.
    • Interference: Electronic devices (cell phones, laptops, even certain charging cables) can sometimes interfere with the fob's signal. Try starting the car with all other electronics removed from the immediate vicinity of the fob.
    • Other Fobs: Ensure no other smart key fobs (for other vehicles) are in the car, as they can sometimes cause signal confusion.
  2. Potential Causes within the Vehicle:

    • Smart Key Antenna/Receiver: The vehicle has multiple antennas that detect the key fob's presence. One or more of these could be faulty, loose, or obstructed.
    • Smart Key Control Module: This module processes the signals from the fob and antennas. A malfunction here could lead to intermittent detection issues.
    • Wiring: Damaged or corroded wiring between the antennas, module, or start button could disrupt communication.
    • Vehicle Battery: While less common for this specific symptom, a weak 12V car battery can sometimes cause various electrical gremlins, including issues with sensitive electronic systems like the smart key.
  3. OBD-II Codes:

    • A malfunction in the smart key system will likely store specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the vehicle's body control module (BCM) or smart key module. These are typically 'B' codes (body-related) or 'U' codes (network communication). Examples might include B1A02 (Key Not Detected) or U0140 (Lost Communication with BCM).
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Since both fobs are affected and you've replaced batteries, it's highly recommended to take your Telluride to a Kia dealership. They have specialized diagnostic equipment that can read the specific codes from the smart key system, test the antennas, and diagnose the smart key control module. This issue can be a significant inconvenience and could eventually lead to being unable to start your vehicle, so prompt diagnosis is advisable.
