Vehicle: 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige X-Pro

Hello everyone,

I'm having a problem with the power liftgate on my 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige X-Pro. Lately, it's been very intermittent. Sometimes it opens fine, other times it won't open at all, or it stops halfway through the cycle. The button inside the car, the button on the key fob, and the button on the liftgate itself all seem to have the same inconsistent behavior.

There's no particular warning light, but it's definitely not working reliably. It's frustrating when I have groceries or kids. Has anyone else with a newer Telluride experienced issues with their power liftgate? Could it be a sensor, the motor, or something else entirely? Any insights would be appreciated!

Intermittent operation of a power liftgate on a modern vehicle like your 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige X-Pro can be quite frustrating and often points to an electrical or mechanical issue within the liftgate system. These systems are complex, involving motors, sensors, and a dedicated control module.

Common Causes for Power Liftgate Issues:

  1. Obstruction Sensors: The liftgate has safety sensors (often pinch sensors along the edges) that detect obstructions. If these sensors are faulty or overly sensitive, they can prematurely stop or reverse the liftgate's movement.
  2. Liftgate Struts/Motor Assembly: The electric motor and hydraulic/gas struts that assist in opening and closing can wear out or become faulty. If the motor is struggling, it might stop halfway or fail to initiate movement.
  3. Wiring Harness Damage: The wiring that runs through the hinge area of the liftgate is subject to repeated flexing. Over time, wires can fray or break, leading to intermittent power or signal loss.
  4. Liftgate Control Module (LGCM): A dedicated control module manages the liftgate's operation. If this module is faulty or experiencing software glitches, it can cause erratic behavior.
  5. Low 12V Battery Voltage: Similar to other electrical systems, if the main vehicle battery is weak, it might not provide consistent power for the high-current demands of the liftgate motor.
  6. Misalignment: A physically misaligned liftgate can bind, causing the system to stop due to perceived resistance.

Diagnostics & When to See a Shop:

  1. Check for Obstructions: Ensure the liftgate's path and the areas around its edges are completely clear of debris, ice, or anything that could trigger the safety sensors.
  2. Manual Operation Test: Try to manually assist the liftgate's movement (if safe to do so) to see if there's any binding or resistance.
  3. Listen for Sounds: Pay attention to any unusual noises (grinding, clicking) when the liftgate attempts to operate.

Given the intermittent nature and the complexity of the power liftgate system, it is highly recommended to have your Telluride inspected by a Kia dealership or a specialist shop. They can:

  • Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The liftgate control module will often store specific C-codes (chassis codes) or B-codes (body codes) related to sensor faults, motor issues, or communication errors (e.g., C1600 - Liftgate Motor Circuit Malfunction).
  • Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Technicians can meticulously check the wiring harness for continuity and damage, especially in the hinge areas.
  • Test Motor and Sensors: They have tools to test the functionality of the liftgate motor, position sensors, and anti-pinch sensors.
  • Perform Calibration/Reset: Sometimes, the liftgate system needs to be recalibrated or reset after a power interruption or component replacement. This often requires dealer-level diagnostic equipment.
