Vehicle: 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating problem with my 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige. It's only got about 15,000 miles on it, and lately, it's been very difficult to start. It cranks for a long time before finally turning over, and sometimes I have to try a couple of times. Once it starts, it runs fine for a bit.

However, a few times now, it has stalled completely while driving at low speeds or when coming to a stop. The check engine light came on after the last stall, and my scanner pulled a P0087 code. I'm really surprised to have these kinds of issues with such a new vehicle. What could be going on here?

Any advice or similar experiences with newer Tellurides would be greatly appreciated. I'm planning to take it to the dealer, but I'd like to be informed.

Hello Chris M.,

Hard starting, stalling, and the P0087 diagnostic trouble code on your 2023 Kia Telluride SX Prestige strongly indicate an issue with the fuel delivery system, specifically low fuel pressure. This is a critical problem that needs immediate professional attention.

Understanding P0087 and Fuel System Issues:

  • P0087 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low: This code means the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the fuel pressure in the fuel rail is consistently below the specified range. This directly explains your hard starting (insufficient fuel to ignite) and stalling (fuel supply cutting out).
  • Fuel System Components: Modern vehicles like your Telluride have both a low-pressure fuel pump (in the tank) and a high-pressure fuel pump (on the engine, for direct injection). Issues can arise in either, or with the fuel pressure sensor, fuel filter, or even clogged fuel injectors.

Potential Causes:

  1. Failing Low-Pressure Fuel Pump: The pump in the fuel tank might not be delivering enough fuel to the high-pressure pump.
  2. Failing High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): This pump is crucial for direct injection engines. A failure here would directly cause low fuel rail pressure.
  3. Clogged Fuel Filter: While less common on newer vehicles with long-life filters, a severely clogged filter could restrict fuel flow.
  4. Faulty Fuel Pressure Sensor: The sensor itself could be providing inaccurate readings, though this is less likely given the actual symptoms of hard starting and stalling.
  5. Fuel Injector Issues: Leaking or clogged injectors could also contribute to pressure drops, but the primary cause for P0087 is usually upstream.

When to See a Shop (Immediately):

Given that your vehicle is stalling, it's unsafe to drive. You should have it towed to a Kia dealership as soon as possible. Here's what they will likely do:

  1. Diagnostic Scan: Confirm the P0087 code and check for any other related codes.
  2. Fuel Pressure Test: They will perform a comprehensive test of both low and high fuel pressure to pinpoint where the pressure drop is occurring.
  3. Component Inspection: Inspect the fuel pumps, fuel lines, and fuel pressure sensor for any visible damage or leaks.
  4. Warranty Claim: Since your Telluride is a 2023 model with only 15,000 miles, it is well within Kia's comprehensive warranty period. Ensure all diagnosis and repairs are handled under warranty.

Do not attempt to drive the vehicle if it's stalling, as this can be dangerous and potentially cause further damage to the engine or catalytic converter.
