Vehicle: 2023 Kia Telluride SX-Prestige

Hi everyone,

I'm a bit concerned about my 2023 Kia Telluride SX-Prestige. I've only got about 15,000 miles on it, but I've noticed some pretty significant uneven tire wear, especially on the front passenger side. The outer edge of that tire looks much more worn than the rest.

In addition to the tire wear, the vehicle also feels like it's pulling slightly to the right when I'm driving straight on a flat road. It's not a severe pull, but I definitely have to keep a bit of pressure on the steering wheel to keep it straight.

Is this normal for a relatively new SUV, or does it sound like a problem? What could be causing both the uneven wear and the pulling? Should I be looking at an alignment, or could it be something else with the suspension?

Uneven tire wear and a vehicle pulling to one side on your 2023 Kia Telluride SX-Prestige, especially at only 15,000 miles, are clear indicators of an underlying issue that needs prompt attention. This is not normal for a new SUV and can lead to premature tire replacement and compromised handling.

Here are the most common causes for these symptoms:

  1. Wheel Alignment Issues: This is the most probable cause. Your vehicle's alignment refers to the angles of the tires relative to each other and the road. There are three main adjustable angles:
    • Toe: If the front wheels are pointed slightly inward or outward (toe-in or toe-out), it causes scrubbing and rapid, uneven wear, often on the inner or outer edge of the tire. This also causes pulling.
    • Camber: If the wheel leans too much inward or outward at the top, it can cause wear on one side of the tire (positive or negative camber).
    • Caster: Incorrect caster can affect steering stability and cause pulling.
    • Hitting a pothole, curb, or even normal wear and tear can throw off alignment.
  2. Worn Suspension Components: Even on a newer vehicle, a faulty or damaged suspension component can affect alignment and cause pulling.
    • Ball Joints: Worn ball joints can introduce play, affecting steering and alignment.
    • Control Arm Bushings: Deteriorated bushings can allow excessive movement.
    • Tie Rod Ends: Loose or worn tie rod ends can cause steering play and pulling.
  3. Tire Issues:
    • Tire Pressure: Incorrect tire pressure (especially underinflation on one side) can cause pulling and uneven wear. Check your tire pressures regularly.
    • Tire Damage: A damaged tire (e.g., internal belt separation) can cause pulling and vibration.
    • Tire Conicity: Sometimes, a manufacturing defect in a tire can cause it to pull.
  4. Brake Drag: A caliper that isn't fully releasing on one side can cause a slight drag, leading to pulling and potentially uneven wear on that tire.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediate Action: You should have your Telluride inspected by a professional as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with these issues will accelerate tire wear, costing you more in the long run, and can affect your vehicle's handling and safety.
  • Alignment Check: Start by having a reputable tire or alignment shop perform a full four-wheel alignment check. They will measure all angles and adjust them to factory specifications. They should also inspect your tires for damage and check suspension components for wear.
