Vehicle: 2020 Kia Telluride SX

Hello Telluride owners! I'm having an issue with the air conditioning in my 2020 Kia Telluride SX, which has about 45,000 miles on it. Lately, the AC just isn't blowing as cold as it used to, especially on hot days. It feels more like a fan than proper cold air.

On top of that, there's a distinct musty or mildew smell that comes through the vents when I first turn on the AC. It usually dissipates after a few minutes, but it's pretty unpleasant. I've heard about some AC issues with other Kia models, but not sure if it applies to the Telluride.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a low refrigerant issue, or something more serious like a failing compressor? What should I ask the dealer to check?

The issues you're experiencing with your 2020 Kia Telluride's AC system—poor cooling and a musty smell—are common complaints that can stem from several different causes. Addressing them promptly can prevent more significant problems.

  1. Causes of poor cooling:
    • Low Refrigerant: The most common cause. This can be due to a slow leak in the AC system (hoses, O-rings, condenser, evaporator).
    • Failing Compressor: The compressor is the heart of the AC system. If it's weak or failing, it won't properly circulate refrigerant.
    • Clogged Condenser: Debris blocking the condenser (located in front of the radiator) can reduce its ability to dissipate heat.
    • Faulty Blend Door Actuator: This can prevent the system from mixing air properly, leading to warmer air.
  2. Causes of musty smell:
    • Mildew/Mold in Evaporator Core: This is very common. Moisture collects on the evaporator, and if it doesn't dry out properly, mold and mildew can grow.
    • Clogged Cabin Air Filter: A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can restrict airflow and trap moisture/odors.
  3. TSBs/Recalls: While there aren't widespread recalls specifically for Telluride AC performance, TSBs related to refrigerant leaks or compressor issues can exist for certain VIN ranges. There are also TSBs for improving cabin air quality and addressing evaporator odors.
  4. When to see a shop: You should take your Telluride to a Kia dealership or a reputable automotive AC specialist. They will perform a diagnostic check which includes:
    • Refrigerant Level Check: Verify proper refrigerant pressure.
    • Leak Detection: Use a dye or electronic sniffer to find any leaks.
    • System Performance Test: Check compressor function, vent temperatures, and pressure readings.
    • Cabin Air Filter Inspection: Replace if dirty.
    • Evaporator Cleaning: If mold is detected, they may recommend an evaporator cleaning service (often called an 'AC Refresh' or 'odor treatment') to eliminate the mildew. This is a common maintenance item. Since your vehicle is a 2020 model, it's likely still under the bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranty, so diagnosis and repair for mechanical failures should be covered.
