Vehicle: 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P400

Hello everyone, I'm experiencing some concerning transmission behavior in my 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P400. It has about 25,000 miles on it, and lately, I've noticed jerky shifts, especially when downshifting at lower speeds, and sometimes a noticeable hesitation before accelerating from a stop.

It feels inconsistent, sometimes smooth, sometimes quite harsh. This isn't what I expect from a premium vehicle. Has anyone else with a newer Defender encountered these transmission issues? Is this something that a software update can fix, or should I be worried about a more serious mechanical problem?

Thanks for any advice!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting and hesitation in modern automatic transmissions can stem from various causes, from simple software glitches to more complex mechanical issues. For your 2022 Defender, here’s what to consider:

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Transmission Software Adaptation: Modern transmissions 'learn' your driving style. Sometimes, this adaptation can get confused or require a reset, especially if there's been a change in driving habits or a minor sensor issue. A software update or adaptation reset can often smooth out shifts.
    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: While less common in newer vehicles, incorrect fluid levels or contaminated fluid can cause shifting problems. Land Rover transmissions are sealed, but leaks can occur.
    • Valve Body/Mechatronic Unit Issues: The valve body (or mechatronic unit in ZF transmissions, commonly used by Land Rover) controls fluid flow to engage gears. Malfunctions here can lead to harsh shifts or hesitation.
    • Sensor Malfunctions: Sensors like the vehicle speed sensor or transmission input/output speed sensors can send incorrect data, confusing the transmission control module.
    • Engine Related Issues: Sometimes, what feels like a transmission issue can be an engine problem (e.g., misfires, fuel delivery issues) that affects power delivery and thus how the transmission responds.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: Any unusual transmission behavior should be addressed quickly to prevent minor issues from becoming major, costly repairs.
    • Dealer Visit: Given the vehicle's age and complexity, a Land Rover dealership is the best first step. They can:
      • Check for TSBs: There might be Technical Service Bulletins specific to your model year addressing transmission software or hardware.
      • Diagnostic Scan: They will perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan for transmission-specific fault codes (e.g., P07xx series codes related to transmission range, shift solenoids, or fluid pressure).
      • Software Update/Adaptation Reset: They can apply the latest transmission control module (TCM) software updates and perform an adaptation reset.
      • Fluid Level/Condition Check: Although sealed, they can check the fluid level and condition using specific tools and procedures.
    • Do not ignore: If the issue worsens or you notice any warning lights, stop driving and have it towed to avoid further damage.
