Vehicle: 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P300

Hey guys,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2022 Land Rover Defender 110, P300 engine. For the past few weeks, I've been getting the 'Low Coolant Level' warning pretty frequently. I've topped it off a couple of times, but the level keeps dropping. Today, I noticed a small puddle under the front of the vehicle after it had been parked for a while.

The puddle seems to be on the passenger side, and the fluid is definitely coolant – it's green. I'm worried about potential engine damage if this continues. It's a relatively new vehicle, so I'm surprised to be having this kind of problem already.

Has anyone with a newer Defender experienced similar coolant issues? What are the common leak points to check on these models, and how urgent is this problem?

A persistent low coolant warning and a visible leak on your 2022 Defender 110 P300 is a serious issue that needs immediate attention. Operating with insufficient coolant can lead to engine overheating and severe damage.

Common Coolant Leak Points on Land Rovers (including newer models):

  1. Water Pump: This is a very common failure point across many JLR engines. Look for drips or residue around the pump housing, often located on the front of the engine.
  2. Coolant Reservoir (Expansion Tank): The plastic tanks can develop cracks, especially around the seams or hose connections. Check for hairline cracks or wet spots.
  3. Hoses and Hose Connections: Inspect all coolant hoses, particularly where they connect to the engine, radiator, and heater core. Look for swelling, cracks, or corrosion around the clamps.
  4. Radiator: While less common on newer vehicles, the radiator can develop leaks, often visible as wet spots or crusty residue on the fins.
  5. Thermostat Housing: Often made of plastic, these can become brittle and crack, leading to leaks.
  6. Oil Cooler: Some models have an engine oil cooler integrated into the cooling system, which can be a source of leaks.

Urgency and Next Steps:

  • High Urgency: Do not ignore a visible coolant leak. Continuously driving with low coolant can cause your engine to overheat, leading to head gasket failure, warped cylinder heads, or even a seized engine.
  • Immediate Action:
    1. Locate the Leak (if safe): With the engine cold, carefully inspect the areas mentioned above. A flashlight can help. Look for green or pink (depending on coolant type) stains or wet spots.
    2. Top Off with Correct Coolant: If you must drive, top off the reservoir with the correct specification coolant (usually OAT P-OAT, often pink/purple, but confirm with your manual). Do NOT mix coolant types.
    3. Monitor Temperature Gauge: If you drive, keep a close eye on the engine temperature gauge. If it starts to climb, pull over immediately and shut off the engine.

When to See a Shop:

  • Given the vehicle's age and the severity of a coolant leak, it's highly recommended to take your Defender to a qualified Land Rover specialist or dealership as soon as possible.
  • A professional can perform a pressure test on the cooling system, which is the most effective way to pinpoint even small, intermittent leaks. They can also check for internal leaks that might not be visible externally.
