Vehicle: 2023 Land Rover Defender 110 X-Dynamic

I've got a 2023 Land Rover Defender 110 X-Dynamic with about 20,000 miles on it. Lately, the transmission has been shifting very roughly, especially noticeable between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes it feels like it's holding gears too long.

Yesterday, I got a prominent "Transmission Fault" message on the dash, though it cleared after I restarted the vehicle. I haven't scanned for OBD codes yet. What should I be looking for, and is this a common issue with these newer Defenders?

ClearTheCode admin answer: Rough shifting and a 'Transmission Fault' message on a relatively new 2023 Defender 110 are concerning. While modern transmissions are complex, several common issues can cause these symptoms.

Here's what to investigate:

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even if the message cleared, a pending code might be stored. Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any transmission-related codes (P07xx series, U0xxx, etc.). This is your first and most crucial step.
  2. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: Although typically sealed for life, extremely low fluid can cause shifting issues. Check for any leaks. Note that checking fluid on many modern transmissions requires specific procedures and tools.
  3. Software Updates: Transmission control modules (TCMs) often receive software updates to improve shifting performance and address known glitches. Your dealer might have an update available.
  4. Transmission Solenoids/Valve Body: These components control fluid flow within the transmission. Faulty solenoids or a malfunctioning valve body can lead to harsh or delayed shifts.
  5. Speed Sensors: Input or output speed sensors provide data to the TCM. If one is faulty, the TCM can't accurately determine gear ratios, leading to shifting problems.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately, if the 'Transmission Fault' message reappears or if the rough shifting worsens. Continued driving with a transmission issue can lead to more severe and costly damage.
  • For any transmission fluid checks, software updates, or internal transmission diagnostics, as these require specialized tools and expertise.
