Vehicle: 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to do some basic maintenance myself on my 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic. It's got about 25,000 miles on it now, and I figure it's time to replace both the engine air filter and the cabin air filter. I've done these on previous vehicles, but I know the Defender can sometimes have its own quirks.

Does anyone have any specific tips or tricks for accessing these filters on the P400 model? Are there any common pitfalls I should watch out for? Also, any recommendations on specific filter brands or types that work well for the Defender?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Great initiative to tackle the air filter replacements on your 2022 Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic! This is a very manageable DIY task that can save you money and ensure your Defender is breathing clean air.

Engine Air Filter Replacement:

  1. Location: On the P400 engine, the air filter housing is typically located on the passenger side of the engine bay, a large black box.
  2. Tools Needed: Usually just a Torx bit driver (T25 or T30) or a flathead screwdriver to loosen the clamps/screws securing the airbox lid.
  3. Procedure:
    • Locate the airbox.
    • Unclip or unscrew the fasteners around the perimeter of the airbox lid.
    • Carefully lift the lid. You may need to gently maneuver it around some hoses or wires.
    • Remove the old, dirty filter. Note its orientation.
    • Clean any debris from inside the airbox.
    • Insert the new filter, ensuring it's seated correctly and the rubber seal is flush.
    • Replace the lid and secure all fasteners.
  4. Tips: Take a photo before you start to remember the orientation of the lid and any clips. Ensure the new filter is a direct fit.

Cabin Air Filter Replacement:

  1. Location: The cabin air filter is usually behind the glove box on the passenger side.
  2. Tools Needed: Often just a small flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to pry open clips, sometimes no tools are needed.
  3. Procedure:
    • Open the glove box.
    • Locate the damper string or arm on the right side of the glove box and unclip it.
    • Push in the sides of the glove box to release it from its stops, allowing it to swing down further.
    • You'll see a rectangular plastic cover, often with clips or small tabs. Release these to open the filter housing.
    • Pull out the old filter. Note the airflow direction arrow (usually pointing down).
    • Insert the new filter, ensuring the airflow arrow points in the correct direction (typically towards the floor of the vehicle).
    • Close the filter housing cover, re-seat the glove box, and reattach the damper string.
  4. Tips: Be gentle with the plastic clips and tabs to avoid breaking them. The space can be a bit tight.

Filter Recommendations: For both filters, high-quality OEM (Land Rover branded) or reputable aftermarket brands like Mann, Mahle, or K&N are excellent choices. Ensure they specify compatibility with your 2022 Defender 110 P400. Regular replacement (typically every 15,000-30,000 miles for engine, and 10,000-15,000 miles for cabin, depending on driving conditions) is key for optimal performance and air quality.
