Vehicle: 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P300

Hey guys, I'm experiencing a really annoying issue with my 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P300. For the past few days, the engine has had a rough idle, especially when cold, and I've noticed a slight loss of power. The check engine light came on, and when I checked the codes, it's showing P0301, indicating a misfire on cylinder 1.

It only has about 30,000 miles on it, which seems a bit early for major engine problems. I'm wondering if this is a common issue with the P300 Ingenium engine. Could it be spark plugs, an ignition coil, or something more serious like an injector?

Any advice or similar experiences with your Defenders would be super helpful. Trying to get an idea of what I'm looking at before I head to the dealer.

The P0301 code on your 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P300, indicating a misfire on cylinder 1, is a direct diagnostic clue. While 30,000 miles might seem early, misfires can occur due to several reasons, even on newer vehicles with the Ingenium engine.

Here are the most common causes for a P0301 code:

  1. Faulty Spark Plug: The simplest and often first thing to check. A worn, fouled, or incorrectly gapped spark plug in cylinder 1 can cause a misfire. Even relatively new plugs can sometimes be defective.
  2. Defective Ignition Coil: The ignition coil provides the high voltage to the spark plug. A failing coil for cylinder 1 would prevent proper spark generation, leading to a misfire. This is a very common cause of single-cylinder misfires.
  3. Clogged or Faulty Fuel Injector: If the fuel injector for cylinder 1 is clogged or not delivering the correct amount of fuel, the air-fuel mixture will be off, causing a misfire. Fuel system cleaners can sometimes help with minor clogs, but a faulty injector needs replacement.
  4. Vacuum Leak: A vacuum leak near cylinder 1 could lean out the air-fuel mixture, leading to a misfire. This might also affect idle quality across multiple cylinders but can sometimes be localized.
  5. Compression Issues: Less common at your mileage, but low compression in cylinder 1 due to valve issues, head gasket problems, or piston ring wear would definitely cause a misfire. This is a more serious mechanical issue.

When to See a Shop:

  • Timely Action: While a rough idle might seem minor, continuous misfires can lead to unburnt fuel entering and potentially damaging the catalytic converter, a much more expensive repair. Address this promptly.
  • Professional Diagnosis: Given your vehicle's relatively low mileage, it's best to have a Land Rover dealership or a reputable independent shop diagnose this. They can perform specific tests:
    • Swap the ignition coil and spark plug from cylinder 1 to another cylinder to see if the misfire code follows the component.
    • Check fuel injector pulse and spray pattern.
    • Perform a compression test or leak-down test if other causes are ruled out.

This systematic approach will accurately identify the root cause of the P0301 code.
