2017 Discovery Sport - Transmission Fluid Change Interval & DIY?

My 2017 Discovery Sport HSE, with about 80k miles, has started feeling a bit hesitant when shifting, especially from 2nd to 3rd. I've been reading up on maintenance and realized I haven't touched the transmission fluid. The dealership says it's "lifetime fluid," but I'm skeptical.

Is there a recommended interval for changing the transmission fluid on these models? And is this something a reasonably skilled DIYer can tackle? I've done oil changes and brake jobs before, but a transmission feels like a bigger beast. What type of fluid do I need, and are there any special tools or procedures I should be aware of? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Summary: For 2017 Discovery Sport - Transmission Fluid Change Interval & DIY?, work through these steps on your 2015+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
