2017 Discovery Sport Turbo Lag/Loss of Power (P0299)

My 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE Lux, with the 2.0L Ingenium engine, has been feeling really sluggish lately. It's like the turbo isn't kicking in properly. The check engine light came on, and my cheap OBD scanner pulled a P0299 code, which I understand means 'underboost'.

I've noticed it most when accelerating onto the highway or trying to pass. It just doesn't have the usual punch and feels very unresponsive. Is this a common issue with these engines? What should I be looking at first? I'm hoping it's not a major turbo replacement.

Summary: For 2017 Discovery Sport Turbo Lag/Loss of Power (P0299), work through these steps on your 2015+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
