Vehicle: 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE, with about 65,000 miles on it, has suddenly developed a rough idle and the check engine light came on solid. It feels sluggish when accelerating and sometimes shudders, especially at lower speeds.

I hooked up my OBD-II scanner and it's throwing a P0301 code, which points to a misfire on cylinder 1. I'm hoping it's not something too serious, but I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Discovery Sport? What were the common culprits you found? Any advice on what I should check first before taking it to a shop would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0301 code indicates a misfire detected in cylinder 1. This is a common diagnostic trouble code, and while it points to a specific cylinder, the underlying cause can vary. Here's a breakdown of common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Spark Plug Issues: A worn, fouled, or damaged spark plug in cylinder 1 is a frequent cause. Spark plugs typically need replacement every 60,000-100,000 miles, depending on the vehicle and plug type.
  2. Ignition Coil Failure: The ignition coil for cylinder 1 might be failing. A faulty coil won't provide enough spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture properly.
  3. Fuel Injector Problems: A clogged, dirty, or faulty fuel injector for cylinder 1 can prevent adequate fuel delivery, leading to a lean misfire.
  4. Compression Issues: Less common, but low compression in cylinder 1 due to worn piston rings, a faulty valve, or a head gasket leak can cause a misfire.
  5. Vacuum Leaks: While less specific to a single cylinder, a significant vacuum leak can affect engine performance and potentially contribute to misfires.

What to Check First:

  • Swap Components: A good diagnostic step is to swap the spark plug and then the ignition coil from cylinder 1 with a known good cylinder (e.g., cylinder 3). If the misfire code moves to the new cylinder (e.g., P0303), you've identified the faulty component.
  • Inspect Spark Plug: Remove the spark plug from cylinder 1 and visually inspect it for signs of wear, oil fouling, or damage.
  • Fuel System Check: If swapping components doesn't isolate the issue, consider having the fuel injector for cylinder 1 tested or cleaned.

When to See a Shop:

If the above steps don't resolve the P0301 code, or if you suspect a more complex issue like a fuel injector problem or low compression, it's best to take your 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport to a qualified mechanic. They have specialized tools to perform fuel pressure tests, compression tests, and more in-depth diagnostics to accurately pinpoint the root cause and prevent further engine damage.
