Vehicle: 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE

Hey everyone, I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE. The infotainment screen will intermittently go completely blank, or sometimes just freeze on whatever was displayed. It usually happens after about 10-15 minutes of driving, but sometimes it's right after startup.

I've tried turning the car off and on again, but it doesn't always fix it. Sometimes it comes back on its own after a few minutes, sometimes it stays off for the whole trip. It's making navigation and music impossible.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Discovery Sport or other Land Rover models? Any tips on what I can check before taking it to the dealership?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system issues like a blank or freezing screen are common across many modern vehicles, including Land Rovers. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

Common Causes:

  • Software Glitches: The most frequent culprit, often resolved with a simple reset or update.
  • Loose Connections: Wiring harnesses behind the dashboard or to the infotainment module can become loose.
  • Module Failure: The InControl Touch Pro module itself, or related control units, can fail.
  • Power Supply Issues: A weak battery or a faulty fuse can cause intermittent power to the system.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Soft Reset: Many Land Rover infotainment systems can be reset by pressing and holding the power button (often the volume knob) for 10-20 seconds until the screen goes black and restarts. This can clear temporary software bugs.
  2. Check Relevant Fuses: Consult your owner's manual to identify the fuse(s) for the infotainment system. A blown or loose fuse can cause intermittent power. Replace any blown fuses with one of the correct amperage.
  3. Check for Software Updates: Connect your vehicle to Wi-Fi (if equipped) and check for over-the-air software updates, or visit your Land Rover dealership. Outdated software can lead to instability.
  4. Inspect Battery Health: A weak 12V battery can cause various electrical gremlins, including infotainment issues. Have your battery tested, especially if your vehicle is several years old.

Diagnostics & When to See a Shop:

If the above steps don't resolve the issue, it's time to visit a qualified Land Rover service center. They can perform a deeper diagnostic scan. Common OBD-II codes that might indicate a communication or module issue include:

  • U0140: Lost Communication With Body Control Module
  • U0155: Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module
  • B1A00: Control Module (often a generic code for internal module fault)

Persistent issues often point to a faulty infotainment module, a wiring harness problem, or a more complex software corruption that requires specialized tools and expertise to diagnose and repair.
