Vehicle: 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE

Hi all,

My 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport with the 2.0L Ingenium engine has developed a really rough idle lately. It feels like the engine is shaking more than usual, and sometimes it stumbles a bit when I'm at a stoplight. I've also noticed an occasional slight hesitation or misfire under light acceleration.

No check engine light yet, which is weird, but the performance just doesn't feel right. I'm worried it might be something serious. It has about 70,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else experienced a rough idle or misfires on their Discovery Sport of this vintage? Any ideas what I should be looking at?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough idle and occasional misfires on a 2016 Discovery Sport are symptoms that warrant immediate attention, even without a check engine light. While the light may not be on yet, pending codes (P030x series for misfires) are likely stored in the ECU.

Common Causes:

  1. Ignition System Issues:
    • Spark Plugs: Worn or fouled spark plugs are a very common cause of misfires and rough idle. They should be inspected or replaced according to maintenance schedules.
    • Ignition Coils: A failing ignition coil on one or more cylinders can lead to intermittent misfires.
  2. Fuel System Problems:
    • Clogged Fuel Injectors: Dirty or clogged injectors can cause an inconsistent fuel spray pattern, leading to misfires.
    • Low Fuel Pressure: A failing fuel pump or clogged fuel filter could reduce fuel delivery.
  3. Air Intake Issues:
    • Vacuum Leaks: Unmetered air entering the engine can disrupt the air-fuel mixture.
    • Dirty Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: An inaccurate MAF reading can lead to an incorrect air-fuel ratio.
  4. Engine Mechanical Issues: (Less common but possible)
    • Low Compression: Worn piston rings or valve issues can cause a loss of compression in a cylinder.

When to See a Shop:

It's crucial to get your Discovery Sport diagnosed by a professional. They will:

  • Scan for Codes: Even without a CEL, a scanner can reveal pending or historical misfire codes (e.g., P0301 for cylinder 1 misfire).
  • Perform a Visual Inspection: Look for obvious vacuum leaks, damaged wiring, or signs of oil/coolant around spark plugs.
  • Test Ignition Components: Check spark plug condition and test ignition coils.
  • Monitor Live Data: Observe fuel trims, O2 sensor readings, and MAF sensor data to pinpoint discrepancies.

Addressing misfires promptly prevents potential damage to the catalytic converters and ensures optimal engine performance and longevity.
