Vehicle: 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque P250

Hi everyone,

I'm having some really frustrating electrical issues with my 2021 Range Rover Evoque P250. It seems like the battery is constantly draining if the car sits for more than a day or two. I've had to jump-start it several times now. On top of that, I'm getting random warning lights popping up on the dash – sometimes it's a 'Restricted Performance' message, other times it's a generic electrical fault, and they usually disappear after a restart.

Could this be a bad battery, or is there a parasitic draw somewhere? I'm worried about taking it in and getting hit with a huge diagnostic bill. Has anyone with a newer Evoque experienced similar problems? Any specific areas I should ask the technicians to check?

Hello Olivia,

Battery drain and intermittent warning lights on a 2021 Range Rover Evoque P250 are classic symptoms of an underlying electrical issue, which can be challenging to diagnose. Given the vehicle's age, it's less likely to be a naturally failing battery and more probable that something is drawing power when it shouldn't be.

Here’s a breakdown of potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Parasitic Draw:

    • Cause: This is the most common reason for battery drain. A component or module is remaining active and drawing power even when the vehicle is off and locked. Common culprits include infotainment modules, telematics units, door lock actuators, or even a faulty alternator diode.
    • Diagnosis: A technician will perform a parasitic draw test, which involves measuring current draw from the battery over an extended period while various fuses are pulled to isolate the circuit responsible.
  2. Failing Battery:

    • Cause: While less likely for a 2021 model, a defective battery can struggle to hold a charge. However, persistent drain usually indicates an external draw.
    • Diagnosis: Have the battery tested for its cold cranking amps (CCA) and overall health. A weak battery can also trigger various low-voltage-related fault codes.
  3. Software Glitches/Module Malfunctions:

    • Cause: Modern Land Rovers are heavily reliant on complex electronic control units (ECUs). A glitch in one module can keep it awake, cause communication errors, and trigger random warning lights.
    • Diagnosis: A diagnostic scan using Land Rover-specific software (e.g., SDD/Pathfinder) can reveal stored fault codes (e.g., U-codes for communication errors, B-codes for body electrical issues) that point to a specific module or circuit.
  4. Alternator Issues:

    • Cause: A faulty alternator might not be charging the battery effectively, leading to a discharged battery.
    • Diagnosis: Check the charging voltage with the engine running. It should be consistently around 13.5-14.5 volts.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately, as persistent battery drain can damage the battery itself and leave you stranded.
  • For a professional parasitic draw test, as this requires specific tools and expertise.
  • For a comprehensive diagnostic scan to identify any fault codes that can pinpoint the problematic module or circuit.
  • If your vehicle is still under warranty, as these types of electrical issues should be covered.
