Vehicle: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Range Rover Sport HSE with the 3.0L Supercharged engine, and I recently got a 'Low Engine Oil' warning message on the dash. This is my first Land Rover with an electronic dipstick, and I'm a bit confused about how to properly check the oil level.

I tried following the instructions in the manual, but it seems to take a while for the reading to become available, and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Should I just add a quart and recheck, or is there a specific procedure for these models?

I haven't noticed any leaks or smoke, but the warning light has me a little worried. Any advice on checking the oil correctly or common reasons for this warning in these specific models would be greatly appreciated!

It's understandable to be confused by the electronic oil level system, as it's quite different from a traditional dipstick. Proper oil level is crucial for your 3.0L Supercharged engine.

How to Check Engine Oil Level (Electronic Dipstick):

  1. Vehicle Preparation: Ensure your Range Rover Sport is on a level surface. The engine must be at normal operating temperature, then switched off. Wait at least 10 minutes (some sources suggest up to 30 minutes for a more accurate reading) for the oil to drain back into the sump.
  2. Accessing the Menu: Turn the ignition on (without starting the engine). Navigate through the instrument cluster menu using the steering wheel controls. Look for the 'Vehicle Information' or 'Service' menu, then select 'Oil Level' or 'Engine Oil'.
  3. Reading: The display will show the current oil level. It might say 'Oil Level OK', 'Oil Level Low - Add 1.0 Litre', or give a specific graphic. If it says 'Oil Level Not Available', you may need to wait longer or repeat the process.

Common Causes for Low Oil Warning:

  • Normal Consumption: All engines consume some oil, especially supercharged ones.
  • Minor Leaks: Even small leaks can add up over time. Check around the oil filter housing, drain plug, and valve covers.
  • PCV System Issues: A faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can lead to increased oil consumption.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you're consistently adding oil and there are no visible leaks, or if the warning persists after adding the correct amount.
  • If you notice blue smoke from the exhaust, which indicates oil burning.
  • If you suspect a significant leak that you can't locate yourself.
  • If the electronic dipstick consistently gives an error or 'not available' message, as this could indicate a sensor issue.

Always use the manufacturer-recommended oil specification (e.g., Castrol EDGE Professional EC5 0W-20 for many JLR engines) when topping off.
