Vehicle: 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport

Hey guys, I'm having an issue with the driver's side headlight on my 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport. The LED daytime running light (DRL) and the main low beam headlight have started flickering intermittently. Sometimes they'll go out completely for a few seconds, then come back on.

I'm also getting a 'Check Headlight System' warning on the dash. It's really concerning, especially when driving at night. Has anyone experienced this with their IS? Is it a bulb, a ballast, or something more serious?

Flickering headlights and DRLs, especially with a warning message, indicate an electrical issue within the lighting system of your 2017 Lexus IS 300. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to check:

  1. LED Driver/Ballast Module Failure: Modern LED headlights don't use traditional bulbs; instead, they have LED arrays powered by a control module, often called a driver or ballast. These modules regulate the power to the LEDs. A failing driver module is a very common cause of flickering, dimming, or complete failure of LED headlights. This is often the most likely culprit for your symptoms.
  2. Wiring or Connector Issues: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the headlight assembly. Look for any signs of corrosion, fraying, or loose connections. A poor connection can cause intermittent power delivery, leading to flickering.
  3. Grounding Problem: A bad ground connection for the headlight circuit can also cause erratic behavior. While less common for a single headlight, it's worth considering.
  4. Fuse Check: Although less likely to cause flickering (usually a blown fuse means no power at all), it's always good to check the relevant fuses in both the under-hood and interior fuse boxes. Consult your owner's manual for the exact fuse locations for the headlights.
  5. Headlight Assembly Internal Fault: In some cases, there could be an internal fault within the entire headlight assembly itself, though this is usually a more expensive repair.

Diagnostics: Your 'Check Headlight System' warning likely means the car's computer has stored a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) related to the lighting system. While standard OBD-II scanners might not always read these specific body control module (BCM) codes, a Lexus-specific scanner (like Techstream) at a dealership or specialized shop will be able to retrieve codes such as B2600 (Headlight System Malfunction) or more specific codes indicating a driver module fault.

When to See a Shop: Given that this is a safety-critical component and involves complex LED systems, it's highly recommended to have your Lexus IS 300 inspected by a Lexus dealership or a reputable automotive electrical specialist. They can accurately diagnose whether it's the LED driver module, wiring, or the entire assembly that needs replacement. Driving with flickering or intermittently failing headlights is dangerous and should be addressed promptly.
