Vehicle: 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport

Hey everyone,

I've got a strange problem with the headlights on my 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport. The driver's side LED headlight has started flickering intermittently, and sometimes it even goes out completely for a few seconds before coming back on. It's not consistent; sometimes it works fine, and other times it's really noticeable.

It's definitely not a bulb issue since these are LEDs, and I'm worried it could be a wiring problem or something more serious. The passenger side headlight works perfectly fine. I've checked for loose connections that I can see, but nothing obvious.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with their Lexus IS or other models with LED headlights? What could be causing this, and is it something I can fix myself?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering or intermittent LED headlights on your 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport can be a safety concern and points to an electrical issue. Unlike traditional halogen bulbs, LEDs don't typically 'burn out' in the same way, but their control modules or power supply can fail.

Common Causes:

  1. LED Driver/Ballast Failure: Each LED headlight assembly has a dedicated driver module (sometimes called a ballast for HID/LED systems) that regulates the power to the LEDs. If this module is failing, it can cause flickering or intermittent operation.
  2. Loose or Corroded Wiring: A loose connection or corroded terminal in the wiring harness leading to the headlight assembly or its driver module can disrupt power flow.
  3. Grounding Issue: Poor grounding for the headlight circuit can lead to inconsistent power delivery and flickering.
  4. Internal Headlight Assembly Fault: Less common, but the LED array within the headlight assembly itself could have an internal fault.
  5. Moisture Intrusion: Water or moisture inside the headlight housing can damage electrical components.

Diagnostics:

  • Visual Inspection: Check the headlight assembly for any signs of moisture, cracks, or damage. Inspect the visible wiring harness for fraying or loose connections.
  • OBD-II Scan: While headlight issues don't always trigger generic OBD-II codes, a Lexus-specific diagnostic tool can often pull codes from the Body Control Module (BCM) or lighting control module (e.g., B12xx codes related to lighting circuits, short circuits, or open circuits).

When to See a Shop:

Given that this is a complex LED system, it's highly recommended to take your Lexus to a dealership or an automotive electrical specialist. They have the tools and expertise to:

  • Properly diagnose the specific component causing the issue (LED driver, wiring, or the entire assembly).
  • Test voltage and continuity at various points in the headlight circuit.
  • Access and interpret specific diagnostic trouble codes from the lighting control modules.
  • Replace the faulty component. Often, the LED driver module can be replaced separately, but sometimes the entire headlight assembly is required, which can be costly.

Driving with a flickering or intermittently working headlight is unsafe and could lead to reduced visibility or even a traffic citation.
