Vehicle: 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport

Hello Lexus community,

I'm having some annoying electrical issues with my 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport. The infotainment screen has started flickering intermittently, especially when I hit a bump or turn sharply. It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently now.

On top of that, my Apple CarPlay (and my wife's Android Auto) connection keeps cutting out. It'll connect, work for a few minutes, then disconnect, and sometimes reconnect on its own. I've tried different cables and different phones, but the problem persists. Could these issues be related? Is it a loose wire, or something more serious with the head unit?

Any insights would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

These symptoms on your 2017 Lexus IS 300 F Sport, especially the flickering screen and intermittent connectivity, strongly suggest a wiring or connection issue within the infotainment system.

Diagnostics & Causes:

  1. Loose Wiring/Connections: The most common culprit for intermittent electrical issues, especially those affected by bumps, is a loose or corroded connection. This could be at the back of the infotainment head unit, the screen itself, or within the USB port wiring harness.
  2. Damaged USB Port/Cable: While you've tried different cables, the USB port itself might be faulty or have internal damage, leading to unstable data transfer for CarPlay/Android Auto.
  3. Head Unit Malfunction: Less likely but possible, the infotainment head unit itself could be failing, causing both screen and connectivity problems. This is usually a more consistent failure rather than intermittent.
  4. Software Glitch: A software bug in the infotainment system could cause these issues, though physical flickering points more towards hardware.

OBD Codes: These types of issues typically do not trigger standard powertrain OBD-II codes. However, a Lexus-specific diagnostic tool might reveal communication errors (U-codes) or infotainment system-specific B-codes if there's a module fault.

When to See a Shop: Given the dual nature of the problem (screen and connectivity), it's advisable to have your Lexus IS 300 inspected by a Lexus dealership or a reputable car audio/electrical specialist. They can safely remove dashboard components to check all wiring connections, inspect the head unit, and test the USB port for proper function. They can also check for any relevant technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates that might address these specific issues.
