Vehicle: 2018 Lexus RX 350

Hey everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2018 Lexus RX 350's backup camera. Lately, it's been intermittently failing. Sometimes when I put the car in reverse, I just get a black screen on the display, or it shows the "Check surroundings for safety" message without any camera feed.

It's not consistent; sometimes it works perfectly fine, other times it's completely out. I've tried restarting the car and checking if there are any obvious obstructions on the camera lens, but no luck. It seems to happen more often after the car has been sitting for a while, but not exclusively.

Has anyone else experienced this with their RX or other Lexus models? Any ideas on what might be causing this or what I can check before taking it to the dealer? Thanks in advance for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent backup camera failures on Lexus models, especially the RX 350 from 2016-2026, are not uncommon and typically point to an issue within the electrical system.

Here are the potential causes and steps for diagnosis:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Loose or Corroded Wiring: The most frequent culprit. Connections to the camera module, the display unit, or within the wiring harness can become loose or corroded over time, leading to intermittent signal loss.
    • Faulty Camera Module: The camera unit itself can fail internally, especially after exposure to elements or vibrations.
    • Infotainment System Glitch: Less common, but a software bug or a temporary hiccup in the head unit can cause the display to not receive the camera feed.
    • Blown Fuse: A specific fuse dedicated to the camera or the infotainment system could be partially failing or intermittently losing connection.
  2. Diagnostic Steps You Can Take:

    • Soft Reset Infotainment: Try holding down the power button for the radio/infotainment system for about 10-15 seconds until it restarts. This can sometimes clear minor software glitches.
    • Check Fuses: Consult your owner's manual for the location of fuses related to the camera, display, or infotainment system. Visually inspect them for breaks. A partially loose fuse could also cause intermittent issues.
    • Inspect Camera and Wiring (Visual): Gently inspect the camera unit on the tailgate for any visible damage or loose connections if accessible. Look for any pinched or frayed wires around the tailgate hinge area.
  3. When to See a Shop: If the issue persists after performing the above steps, it's highly recommended to take your 2018 Lexus RX 350 to a Lexus dealership or a reputable automotive electrical specialist.

    • Professional Diagnosis: They have specialized diagnostic tools (like Lexus Techstream) that can read specific B-codes (Body codes) or U-codes (Network Communication codes) related to the camera system or infotainment unit. Generic OBD-II scanners typically won't detect these specific issues.
    • Wiring Harness Inspection: Technicians can perform a thorough continuity test on the wiring harness from the camera to the head unit, identifying any breaks or shorts.
    • Module Replacement: If the camera module or the head unit is determined to be faulty, they can replace the component.

Addressing this promptly will ensure your safety and convenience when reversing.
