Vehicle: 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out. My 2018 Lexus RX 350 (F Sport trim) just threw a check engine light. I pulled the code with my OBD-II scanner, and it's showing P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1).

The car seems to be driving fine, no noticeable loss of power or strange noises. Fuel economy also seems normal. I'm a bit worried about this, as I know catalytic converters can be expensive.

Could this be something simpler than a bad cat? Maybe an O2 sensor? Any advice on what to check first before I take it to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer: The P0420 code on your 2018 Lexus RX 350 indicates that the catalytic converter on Bank 1 is not operating as efficiently as it should be. While it can point to a failing catalytic converter, there are several other potential causes that are often less expensive to fix.

Here are the common causes and steps to diagnose:

  1. Oxygen Sensors: A faulty upstream or downstream oxygen (O2) sensor can provide incorrect readings to the engine control unit (ECU), leading it to believe the catalyst is inefficient. This is a very common cause.
  2. Exhaust Leaks: Leaks in the exhaust system, particularly before or near the O2 sensors, can allow unmetered air in, skewing O2 sensor readings.
  3. Engine Misfires or Rich/Lean Conditions: Persistent engine misfires or issues causing the engine to run too rich (too much fuel) or too lean (too little fuel) can damage the catalytic converter over time or cause it to operate inefficiently.
  4. Fuel Quality/Additives: Sometimes, certain fuel additives or poor fuel quality can temporarily affect catalyst efficiency.

When to see a shop:

  • Initial Diagnosis: It's recommended to have a professional shop perform a thorough diagnosis. They can use advanced scan tools to monitor live O2 sensor data, perform backpressure tests, and visually inspect the exhaust system for leaks.
  • Catalytic Converter Replacement: If the O2 sensors and exhaust system are confirmed to be healthy, and there are no underlying engine performance issues, then a catalytic converter replacement might be necessary. This is a significant repair, so ensure a proper diagnosis first.
  • Driving with the Code: While your car might seem to drive normally, a P0420 code indicates increased emissions. Prolonged driving with an inefficient catalyst can sometimes lead to other engine issues or prevent your vehicle from passing emissions tests.
