Vehicle: 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport with about 75,000 miles on it, and lately, I've noticed a persistent clunking noise coming from the front end, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It feels like the ride has also gotten a bit harsher than it used to be.

It's not constant, but definitely noticeable when the suspension is working. I've checked for anything obviously loose, but can't pinpoint it. Has anyone else experienced this with their RX 350, particularly around this mileage? What should I be looking for?

Thanks for any advice!

A clunking noise and harsher ride in your 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport at 75,000 miles often points to common wear items in the suspension system. Here’s a breakdown of potential causes and what to check:

  1. Inspect Sway Bar Links: These are a very common culprit for clunking noises. The bushings or ball joints on the sway bar end links can wear out, causing metal-on-metal contact or excessive play. Try to wiggle the sway bar links; any significant play indicates wear.
  2. Check Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in the lower or upper control arms can deteriorate over time, leading to play and noise, especially when the suspension articulates. A visual inspection might reveal cracks or tears in the rubber.
  3. Evaluate Struts/Shock Absorbers: Worn struts can lead to a harsher ride and sometimes a clunking sound if the internal components are failing or the strut mounts are compromised. Look for fluid leaks on the strut body or excessive bouncing after going over a bump.
  4. Examine Ball Joints: While less common than sway bar links, worn lower ball joints can also produce clunking sounds and affect handling. This requires lifting the vehicle and checking for play.

When to See a Shop: If you're uncomfortable performing these inspections yourself, or if you identify significant wear, it's crucial to have a professional technician diagnose the issue. Worn suspension components can compromise vehicle handling, braking, and tire wear, leading to safety concerns. A shop can perform a thorough suspension inspection and recommend precise repairs, often using specialized tools to check for play in various components.
