Vehicle: 2018 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport

My 2018 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport has been having some really rough shifts lately, especially going from 2nd to 3rd and downshifting. It feels like it's clunking into gear sometimes. It's got about 70k miles on it.

No warning lights yet, but it's definitely not smooth like it used to be. The car hesitates a bit before engaging reverse sometimes too.

Has anyone else experienced this with their RX? Is this a common issue for this model year?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Harsh or delayed shifting in your 2018 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport can be concerning, especially without a Check Engine Light. Here are common causes and steps:

Causes:

  • Low or Degraded Transmission Fluid: Even in "sealed for life" transmissions, fluid can degrade or levels can drop over time, affecting shifting performance.
  • Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software Issues: Sometimes, a software glitch or outdated calibration in the TCM can cause erratic shift patterns.
  • Worn Solenoids: The solenoids inside the transmission control fluid flow, and if they stick or wear, they can cause harsh or delayed shifts.
  • Internal Transmission Wear: Less common at 70k miles, but internal components can wear, leading to mechanical issues.

Steps:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: While often considered sealed, a professional can check the fluid level and condition. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid is a red flag.
  2. Consult Dealership for Software Updates: Inquire with a Lexus service center if there are any known TCM software updates or recalls for your specific model year that address shifting concerns.
  3. Professional Diagnostic Scan: Even without a CEL, a specialized transmission scanner can often pull pending or historical codes related to shift quality or solenoid performance.

When to see a shop: It's advisable to have your vehicle inspected by a qualified Lexus technician as soon as possible. Ignoring transmission symptoms can lead to more severe and costly damage. If the shifting becomes erratic, you hear grinding noises, or a "Check Transmission" warning appears, stop driving and have it towed to a reputable shop or dealership for diagnosis.
