Vehicle: 2020 Lexus ES 300h Luxury

Hi all,

My 2020 Lexus ES 300h Luxury trim, with about 45,000 miles, suddenly displayed a 'Check Hybrid System' warning on the dash this morning. Along with the warning, I noticed a significant reduction in power, and the car felt sluggish. It's still driveable, but definitely not normal.

I don't have an advanced hybrid-specific scanner, just a basic OBD-II, which isn't showing any generic P-codes. I'm worried about driving it too much like this. Could this be related to the 12V battery, or something more serious with the hybrid battery pack or inverter?

Any insights from other ES 300h owners or hybrid experts would be greatly appreciated!

A 'Check Hybrid System' warning on your 2020 Lexus ES 300h, especially when accompanied by reduced power, is a serious indicator that requires immediate attention. While a basic OBD-II scanner might not show generic P-codes, there are likely specific manufacturer codes stored in the hybrid system's control modules.

Here are common causes and recommended actions:

  1. 12V Auxiliary Battery: Surprisingly, a weak or failing 12V battery can trigger various hybrid system warnings, as it powers the main computer systems. While less likely to cause significant power reduction, it's a relatively easy check. Ensure your 12V battery is fully charged and in good health.
  2. Hybrid Battery Pack Issues: The high-voltage hybrid battery pack can develop issues with individual cells or the overall pack. This is a common cause for reduced power and hybrid system warnings. Codes like P0A80 (Replace Hybrid Battery Pack) or P0A7F (Hybrid Battery Pack Deterioration) are often associated with this.
  3. Inverter/Converter Assembly: The inverter converts DC power from the hybrid battery to AC power for the electric motor, and the converter manages voltage. Malfunctions in this critical component can lead to power loss and system warnings.
  4. Hybrid Transaxle/Motor-Generator Issues: Problems within the hybrid transaxle or the motor-generators can also trigger these warnings. This is less common but possible.
  5. Cooling System for Hybrid Components: The hybrid battery and inverter often have their own dedicated cooling systems. Overheating due to a fault in these systems can cause warnings and power reduction.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. A 'Check Hybrid System' warning with reduced power is not something to ignore. Continuing to drive the vehicle could potentially cause further damage or leave you stranded.
  • You will need a specialized diagnostic tool (like the Toyota/Lexus Techstream) to read the specific hybrid system codes. A Lexus dealership or a reputable independent shop specializing in hybrid vehicles will have the necessary equipment and expertise.
  • Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage hybrid components yourself unless you are a trained and certified hybrid technician, as there are significant safety risks involved.
