Vehicle: 2020 Lexus ES 350 Luxury

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2020 Lexus ES 350 Luxury trim. Recently, the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) systems have stopped working. I'm getting a warning message on the dash, and the indicators in the side mirrors don't light up when they should.

I've tried cleaning the rear bumper area where the sensors are located, thinking it might be dirt or debris, but that hasn't helped. Is this a common problem with the ES 350? Could it be a sensor failure, or perhaps a software glitch? Any advice on troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Issues with driver-assist systems like BSM and RCTA can be concerning. Here's what might be happening with your 2020 Lexus ES 350:

Diagnostics & Causes:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Damage: While you've cleaned the area, sometimes even minor damage to the bumper or a misaligned sensor (often located behind the rear bumper corners) can cause these systems to malfunction. Road debris or a minor bump could be the culprit.
  2. Wiring Harness Issues: A loose or damaged wiring harness connected to the BSM/RCTA sensors or control module can interrupt communication, leading to system errors.
  3. Control Module Malfunction: The BSM/RCTA systems rely on a dedicated control module. If this module fails or experiences a software glitch, the systems will cease to function correctly.
  4. Software Glitch: Less common, but sometimes a system reset or a software update from the dealership can resolve intermittent electronic issues.

OBD Codes: When these systems fail, specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are usually stored. Common codes might include:

  • U0155: Lost Communication with Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Control Module (or other specific module communication errors)
  • B2281: Blind Spot Monitor Sensor Malfunction (or similar B-codes specific to the BSM/RCTA system)

When to See a Shop: Since these are safety-critical systems, it's best to have your Lexus ES 350 diagnosed by a Lexus dealership or a specialized automotive electrical shop. They have the proprietary diagnostic tools to read specific BSM/RCTA module codes, test sensor functionality, and check wiring integrity. Attempting to repair these systems yourself without proper tools can be challenging and may not resolve the underlying issue.
