Vehicle: 2020 Lexus ES 350 Luxury

Hi everyone,

I'm having some serious issues with the infotainment system in my 2020 Lexus ES 350 Luxury trim. The touchscreen frequently freezes, becomes unresponsive, or just completely blacks out while I'm driving. Sometimes it comes back on after a few minutes, other times I have to restart the car.

This is really annoying, especially when I'm relying on navigation or trying to use Apple CarPlay, which also disconnects when the screen acts up. I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the power button, but it only helps temporarily.

Has anyone else experienced this with their ES? Is there a known fix or a software update I might be missing? Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system issues like freezing and blackouts are frustrating and can stem from several electrical or software-related causes in your 2020 Lexus ES 350.

1. Software Glitch/Update:

  • Hard Reset: Try a more thorough reset than just holding the power button. Sometimes disconnecting the 12V battery for 15-30 minutes can force a full system reboot for the infotainment module (make sure to have your radio codes if applicable, though less common in newer Lexus models).
  • Firmware Update: Lexus periodically releases software updates for its infotainment systems. A dealership can check if your vehicle's system is running the latest firmware. Outdated software can lead to bugs and instability.

2. Connectivity Issues (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto):

  • If the issue primarily occurs when using Apple CarPlay, try testing the system without your phone connected for a period. A faulty USB cable or a software conflict with your phone's OS could be contributing.
  • Ensure your phone's operating system is also up to date.

3. Hardware Malfunction:

  • Loose Connections: Over time, internal connections to the display or the head unit module can become loose. This is less common but possible.
  • Overheating: While rare, if the head unit module is overheating, it could cause intermittent shutdowns. Feel around the unit after it's been running for a while (safely, while parked).
  • Faulty Display or Head Unit: The most severe cause is a failing display panel or the main head unit module itself. This would typically require replacement.

When to See a Shop: Since your vehicle is a 2020 model, it's likely still under the factory warranty (4 years/50,000 miles). This is the best time to take it to a Lexus dealership. They can:

  • Perform a diagnostic scan to check for any stored trouble codes related to the infotainment system (e.g., B1590, B1591 for display communication errors).
  • Check for and apply the latest software updates.
  • Thoroughly inspect wiring and connections.
  • If necessary, recommend and perform a warranty replacement of the display or head unit module.
