Vehicle: 2020 Lexus ES 350 Luxury

Hi all,

I'm noticing an issue with the brakes on my 2020 Lexus ES 350, which has about 45,000 miles. The brake pedal feels much softer than it used to, almost spongy, and I have to push it down further to get the car to stop. It also feels like the stopping distance has increased a bit, which is concerning.

There are no warning lights on the dash, and I haven't seen any visible fluid leaks under the car. The brake fluid reservoir looks to be at the correct level. Could this be air in the lines, or something more serious? Any ideas on what might be causing this and what I should check first?

Thanks for your help!

A soft or spongy brake pedal on your 2020 Lexus ES 350 is a significant safety concern and should be addressed immediately. While the absence of warning lights and visible leaks is good, it doesn't rule out several potential issues. Here’s what could be happening:

  1. Air in the Brake Lines: This is the most common cause of a spongy pedal. Air is compressible, unlike brake fluid, so it absorbs pedal pressure, leading to a soft feel. This can happen after brake work, or if the fluid level dropped too low at some point allowing air in.
  2. Failing Master Cylinder: The master cylinder is responsible for converting pedal pressure into hydraulic pressure. If its internal seals are worn, fluid can bypass them, leading to a soft pedal that might slowly sink to the floor when held down. This is a more serious issue.
  3. Brake Fluid Contamination or Degradation: Old or contaminated brake fluid can boil at lower temperatures, creating vapor bubbles (air) in the lines, especially under heavy braking. Brake fluid should be flushed periodically, typically every 2-3 years.
  4. Minor Fluid Leak: Even a small, slow leak that isn't immediately visible on the ground could be allowing air into the system or reducing hydraulic pressure. Check all brake lines, calipers, and wheel cylinders for any signs of weeping.

When to See a Shop: Given that braking performance is compromised, it is highly recommended to have your Lexus ES 350 inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. Driving with a spongy brake pedal is dangerous. A professional can properly diagnose the issue by:

  • Bleeding the brake system to remove any air.
  • Testing the master cylinder for internal leaks.
  • Inspecting all brake components for leaks or damage.
  • Checking the condition and boiling point of your brake fluid.
