Vehicle: 2021 Lexus LS 500 F Sport

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2021 Lexus LS 500 F Sport. While driving yesterday, the ABS warning light, Traction Control warning light, and the 'Brake System Malfunction' message all came on simultaneously. At the same time, the steering became noticeably stiffer, almost like the power steering wasn't working correctly.

I pulled over, turned the car off and on, and the lights went away for a bit, but then came back. There are no obvious leaks under the car, and the brake pedal feels normal. I haven't scanned for codes yet, but I'm wondering if these systems are all interconnected. Could it be a wheel speed sensor, or something more serious with the ABS module or steering system itself?

Any advice or similar experiences with a 2021 LS 500 would be greatly appreciated. This is a premium car, and I'm quite worried about these warnings.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The simultaneous illumination of ABS, Traction Control, and Brake System Malfunction lights, coupled with stiff steering on your 2021 Lexus LS 500, strongly suggests an issue within the vehicle's integrated braking and stability control system. These systems are highly interconnected, and a fault in one often triggers warnings in others.

Here are the most common culprits:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors: These sensors provide crucial data to the ABS and Traction Control modules. A faulty or dirty wheel speed sensor (or its wiring) can cause erroneous readings, leading the system to believe a wheel is locking up or slipping, thus triggering all associated warning lights. This is a very common cause.
  2. ABS Module/Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU): The ABS module (often integrated with the HCU) is the central control unit for these systems. A malfunction within the module itself can cause widespread errors. This is a more serious and costly repair.
  3. Brake Fluid Level/Pressure: While you mentioned the pedal feels normal, a low brake fluid level or an issue with the brake pressure sensor could trigger these warnings. Ensure the brake fluid reservoir is at the correct level.
  4. Steering Angle Sensor: The steering angle sensor provides input to the stability control system. A fault here could potentially affect both stability control and, in some advanced systems, influence power steering assist.
  5. Wiring/Connectors: Damaged wiring or corroded connectors to any of these sensors or modules can interrupt communication and cause intermittent or persistent warning lights.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediate Action: Given that these are critical safety systems (braking, stability, and potentially steering), you should have your Lexus LS 500 inspected by a professional as soon as possible. While the car might still drive, the effectiveness of your ABS and Traction Control systems could be compromised.
  • Professional Diagnosis: Your vehicle is under warranty, so the best course of action is to take it to a Lexus dealership. They have specialized diagnostic equipment that can read specific fault codes from the ABS, Traction Control, and power steering modules. This will pinpoint the exact sensor, module, or wiring issue, ensuring a precise and warrantied repair.
