Vehicle: 2022 Lexus ES 350 Luxury

Hi all,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2022 Lexus ES 350 (Luxury trim). This morning, I went to start it, and it just cranks and cranks but won't turn over. It sounds like it's trying, but the engine just won't catch.

I checked the battery, and it seems fine – all the lights and electronics work, and it cranks strongly. I even tried boosting it just in case, but no luck. There's no Check Engine Light on, and when I plug in my basic OBD-II scanner, it shows no stored codes.

Any ideas on what could be preventing it from starting? It was running perfectly yesterday. Could it be a fuel issue or something with the immobilizer? I'm a bit stumped.

A 'crank but no start' condition on your 2022 Lexus ES 350, especially with no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), can be tricky to diagnose but often points to a fundamental issue with either fuel, spark, or air, or a critical sensor preventing engine operation.

Here are the most common causes and what to check:

  1. Fuel Delivery Issues:
    • Low Fuel Pressure: Even if you have gas in the tank, the fuel pump might not be delivering enough pressure to the engine. This could be due to a failing fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter (less common on newer vehicles), or a faulty fuel pressure regulator.
    • No Fuel: While you mentioned having gas, ensure the fuel gauge is accurate and you haven't simply run out.
  2. Ignition System Problems:
    • No Spark: Even though it's a newer car, issues with spark plugs, ignition coils, or the ignition system's power supply can prevent combustion. This is less likely to happen suddenly across all cylinders without a code, but worth considering.
  3. Critical Sensor Failure:
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP): This sensor tells the ECU when and how fast the crankshaft is rotating. If it fails, the ECU won't know when to fire the spark plugs or inject fuel, leading to a no-start. A faulty CKP sensor doesn't always trigger a CEL immediately.
    • Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP): Similar to the CKP, this sensor is crucial for timing. A failure can prevent starting.
  4. Immobilizer System:
    • If your key fob isn't properly recognized by the car's immobilizer system, the engine will crank but not start. Try using your spare key fob to rule out a faulty primary key.
  5. Engine Control Unit (ECU) Issues: While rare, a faulty ECU could prevent the engine from starting, though this usually presents with other symptoms or codes.

What to do:

  • Step 1: Check for fuel pump operation. Turn the ignition to the 'ON' position (without cranking) and listen for a faint hum from the rear of the vehicle, which indicates the fuel pump priming. If you don't hear it, the pump might be failing.
  • Step 2: Try the spare key. This is a quick way to rule out an immobilizer issue with your primary key.
  • Step 3: Professional Diagnosis. Since there are no codes, a professional diagnostic tool is needed to check live data streams for fuel pressure, spark timing, and sensor readings. A technician can quickly determine if it's a fuel delivery problem, a sensor issue, or something else.

When to see a shop: If the spare key doesn't work and you can't hear the fuel pump prime, or if you're uncomfortable performing further checks, it's best to have your ES 350 towed to a Lexus dealership or a trusted independent mechanic. They have the specialized tools to diagnose this type of issue efficiently.
