Vehicle: 2022 Lexus ES 350 Luxury

Hey Lexus community,

I'm having a really annoying issue with the infotainment system in my 2022 Lexus ES 350 Luxury. For the past week or so, the screen has been freezing randomly, sometimes for a few seconds, and then it will completely restart itself. This happens whether I'm using Apple CarPlay, the built-in navigation, or just listening to the radio.

It's really disruptive, especially when I'm trying to use navigation. I've tried turning the car off and on, and even disconnected the 12V battery for a few minutes, but the problem keeps coming back. Is this a known issue with the 2022 models, or could it be a software glitch? Any advice on what to do?

Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches like freezing and restarting can be incredibly frustrating, especially in newer vehicles. This often points to a software issue, a faulty hardware component within the head unit, or a power supply problem.

Diagnostics & Next Steps:

  1. Check for Software Updates: Lexus frequently releases software updates for their infotainment systems. Your dealership can check if there's a pending update for your 2022 ES 350 that addresses known bugs.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset (if possible): Some Lexus models have a specific button combination (e.g., holding the power button for 10-15 seconds) that can force a hard reset of the infotainment system. Consult your owner's manual or dealership for the exact procedure for your model.
  3. Isolate the Source:
    • Does it happen with specific functions (e.g., only with CarPlay, or only with navigation)?
    • Does it happen more frequently when using a specific USB port or device?
  4. Check 12V Battery Health: While you've disconnected it, ensure your 12V battery is in good health. A weak battery can cause various electrical gremlins, including infotainment issues.

Common Causes:

  • Software Bug: The most common cause for intermittent issues like this in newer systems. A corrupted file or a bug in the operating system can lead to instability.
  • Faulty Head Unit/Module: A hardware defect within the infotainment head unit or a related control module can cause freezing and reboots.
  • Loose Wiring/Connection: Less common, but a loose or corroded connection to the head unit could cause intermittent power loss or data transfer issues.
  • Overheating: In rare cases, the unit could be overheating, causing it to shut down and restart.

When to See a Shop:

Since you've already tried basic resets, it's highly recommended to schedule an appointment with your Lexus dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for fault codes within the infotainment system (which may not show on a standard OBD-II scanner) and can perform software updates or replace faulty hardware under warranty. This issue should be covered under your vehicle's factory warranty.
