Vehicle: 2022 Lexus GX 460 Premium

Hello Lexus community,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2022 Lexus GX 460 Premium, which has only about 25,000 miles. This morning, I went to start it, and it just cranks and cranks but won't fire up. The battery seems strong, as it's cranking vigorously, and all the dash lights come on as usual. There's no Check Engine Light currently on, and my basic scanner shows no codes.

I tried both key fobs, thinking it might be an immobilizer issue, but no luck. I also checked the fuel cap to make sure it was tight. Could this be a fuel pump issue, or perhaps something electrical? It was running perfectly fine yesterday.

Any suggestions on what to check or common issues with the GX 460 that might cause a no-start condition like this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'cranks but no start' condition on your 2022 Lexus GX 460 typically points to one of three fundamental issues: lack of fuel, lack of spark, or lack of sufficient compression. Since it's cranking strongly, we can likely rule out a completely dead 12V battery.

Here's a systematic approach to diagnose the problem:

  1. Check for Fuel:
    • Listen for Fuel Pump: When you turn the ignition to the 'ON' position (without cranking), listen carefully for a faint whirring sound from the rear of the vehicle for a few seconds. This is the fuel pump priming. If you don't hear it, the pump might be faulty, or there's an electrical issue to the pump (fuse, relay).
    • Fuel Pressure: A more definitive test is to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail, but this requires specialized tools.
  2. Check for Spark:
    • Ignition System: While harder to check without tools, a lack of spark can be due to faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or a crankshaft/camshaft position sensor. If you have a spare spark plug, you can carefully remove one, connect it to its coil, ground the plug, and observe for spark while cranking (exercise extreme caution).
  3. Immobilizer System: You mentioned trying both key fobs, which is a good step. If the immobilizer system is preventing the start, you might see a security light flashing rapidly on the dash. If it's not flashing, the immobilizer is likely not the primary issue.
  4. Engine Sensors: A faulty crankshaft position sensor or camshaft position sensor can prevent the ECU from knowing when to fire the injectors and coils, leading to a no-start. These often throw codes, but not always immediately if the failure is intermittent or complete.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you cannot hear the fuel pump priming, or if you suspect a lack of spark, it's best to have a professional diagnose the issue. They can safely test fuel pressure, check for spark, and scan for manufacturer-specific codes that your basic scanner might miss.
  • Given the vehicle's young age and low mileage, it's possible there's a warranty-covered issue. A Lexus dealership would be the ideal place to start for diagnosis and repair.
