Vehicle: 2022 Lexus GX 460 Premium

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some input on my 2022 Lexus GX 460 Premium. Lately, I've noticed some strange behavior from the transmission. It seems to hesitate quite a bit when shifting, especially from 2nd to 3rd gear, and sometimes from 3rd to 4th. It's not always smooth, and occasionally I feel a noticeable 'thump' or hard shift, particularly when accelerating from a stop or after slowing down.

The car only has about 30,000 miles on it, and I haven't seen any check engine lights or transmission warning lights come on. It's just a feeling that something isn't right with the shifting.

Could this be normal break-in behavior, or is it a sign of a potential issue? Has anyone else with a newer GX 460 experienced this? What should I be looking for or asking the dealership about? Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's concerning to experience transmission hesitation and hard shifts in your relatively new 2022 Lexus GX 460, especially without any warning lights. While some transmissions have adaptive learning that can cause minor irregularities, persistent or worsening symptoms warrant attention.

Here are potential causes and diagnostic considerations:

  1. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: Even in a sealed transmission, fluid levels can sometimes be off from the factory or degrade prematurely. Low or contaminated fluid can lead to shifting problems. While it's not a user-serviceable item on many modern Lexus transmissions, a technician can check this.
  2. Transmission Software/Adaptive Learning: Modern transmissions have sophisticated software that 'learns' your driving style. Sometimes, this learning can become corrupted, or a software update might be available to refine shifting logic. A dealership can check for and apply any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software updates.
  3. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is the 'brain' of the automatic transmission, directing fluid pressure to engage different gears. Issues with solenoids or passages within the valve body can cause delayed or harsh shifts.
  4. Sensor Malfunctions: Sensors like the speed sensors (input/output shaft speed sensors) or throttle position sensor provide critical data to the transmission control module (TCM). Incorrect readings can lead to improper shift points or pressures.
  5. Torque Converter: While less common at 30,000 miles, a failing torque converter can cause shuddering, hesitation, or inconsistent power transfer.

What you can do:

  • Note Specifics: Keep a detailed log of when the issues occur (e.g., cold start, hot engine, specific gears, speed, throttle input). This information is invaluable for a technician.
  • Try Resetting Adaptive Learning (if applicable): Some vehicles allow a temporary reset of the adaptive learning by disconnecting the battery for a short period, though this isn't officially recommended by Lexus for transmission issues and may not apply to your specific model.

When to see a shop:

Given the vehicle's young age and low mileage, this issue should be addressed under warranty. Schedule an appointment with your Lexus dealership immediately. Describe the symptoms in detail, referencing your notes. Even without a check engine light, their diagnostic tools can often detect pending codes or abnormal sensor readings that indicate a problem with the transmission control module or internal components. Do not delay, as early intervention can prevent more significant problems.
