Vehicle: 2022 Lexus LS 500

Hi all,

I'm experiencing an issue with the Pre-Collision System (PCS) in my 2022 Lexus LS 500. The PCS warning light has come on, and I'm getting a message on the dash saying 'Pre-Collision System Malfunction. Visit Your Dealer.' This happened suddenly, and the system seems to be completely disabled.

I haven't had any front-end impacts, and the windshield (where the camera is) is clean. I've tried restarting the car multiple times, but the warning persists. It's concerning because this is a major safety feature.

Has anyone else with a newer Lexus, especially an LS 500, encountered this? What could be the potential causes for a PCS malfunction without any obvious physical damage?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The Pre-Collision System (PCS) is a sophisticated safety feature in your 2022 Lexus LS 500, relying on a combination of radar (behind the front emblem) and a camera (at the top of the windshield). A 'PCS Malfunction' warning indicates that one or more components of this system are not functioning correctly.

Common Causes:

  1. Sensor Obstruction: Even if your windshield is clean, the radar sensor behind the Lexus emblem in the grille can be obstructed by dirt, ice, snow, or even a car wash residue. Ensure the emblem area is completely clear.
  2. Sensor Misalignment: A minor bump, even one you might not notice, could slightly misalign the radar sensor or the front camera. These systems require precise calibration.
  3. Wiring or Connector Issues: A loose or corroded electrical connection to the radar unit, camera, or associated control module can cause intermittent or permanent failure.
  4. Software Glitch: Like many advanced electronic systems, a software bug or corruption in the PCS control module can trigger a malfunction.
  5. Faulty Sensor/Module: The radar sensor, camera unit, or the PCS control module itself could have an internal fault.
  6. Low 12V Battery Voltage: While less common for PCS specifically, low voltage can sometimes cause various electronic systems to malfunction or report errors.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

When a PCS malfunction occurs, the vehicle's computer will store specific diagnostic trouble codes. A professional scan tool will be able to retrieve these. Common codes might include:

  • C1A00: Front Radar Sensor Malfunction
  • C1A01: Front Camera Malfunction
  • U0100, U0121, U0122: Lost Communication with various control modules (e.g., Engine, ABS/VSC)
  • Codes related to sensor calibration or internal faults.

When to See a Shop:

Since the PCS is a critical safety system, and given the complexity of the components involved, it is imperative to take your 2022 Lexus LS 500 to a Lexus dealership immediately. They have the specialized equipment and training to:

  • Perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan to pinpoint the exact cause of the malfunction.
  • Inspect and test the radar sensor, front camera, and associated wiring.
  • Perform necessary sensor recalibrations if a sensor has been misaligned.
  • Install any available software updates for the PCS module.
  • Replace any faulty components (sensor, camera, or control module).

Do not attempt to troubleshoot this system yourself, as improper handling can lead to further issues or incorrect operation of a vital safety feature.
