Vehicle: 2022 Lexus NX 300h Luxury

Hey everyone,

I've got a problem with my 2022 Lexus NX 300h Luxury trim. Lately, I've been getting an 'Adaptive Front-lighting System Malfunction' error message on my dash. I've noticed that the headlights don't seem to be adjusting when I turn the steering wheel anymore, which is a feature I really appreciate for night driving.

I haven't been in any accidents or had any front-end work done. Could this be a sensor issue, or maybe a problem with the AFS control module itself? It's a relatively new car, so I'm a bit surprised to be seeing this. Has anyone else with a newer NX experienced this?

Thanks for your help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) malfunction on your 2022 Lexus NX 300h can impact visibility and safety, especially at night. Here's what could be causing the issue:

Diagnostics & Causes:

  1. AFS Control Module Failure: The AFS system relies on a dedicated control module to interpret steering angle, vehicle speed, and pitch data to adjust the headlights. A fault in this module is a common cause for such errors.
  2. Steering Angle Sensor: The AFS system uses input from the steering angle sensor to know when and how much to turn the headlights. If this sensor is faulty or miscalibrated, the AFS won't function correctly.
  3. Headlight Leveling Sensors: Sensors, often located near the suspension, monitor the vehicle's pitch to adjust headlight height. A fault in these sensors or their wiring can also trigger an AFS error.
  4. Actuator Malfunction: Each adaptive headlight contains small motors (actuators) that physically move the light beam. If one of these actuators fails, the headlight won't adjust, and an error will be triggered.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged or loose wiring to any of the AFS components (sensors, module, headlights) can interrupt communication and cause a malfunction.

OBD Codes: When an AFS malfunction occurs, specific B-codes (Body codes) or U-codes (Network Communication codes) are typically stored. Examples might include:

  • B2410: AFS Control Module Malfunction
  • B2411: Steering Angle Sensor Malfunction
  • U0100: Lost Communication with ECM/PCM A (or other module communication errors)

When to See a Shop: Given that the AFS is a complex safety system, it's crucial to have your 2022 Lexus NX 300h inspected by a Lexus dealership. They have the specialized diagnostic equipment to read the specific AFS trouble codes, pinpoint the exact faulty component, and perform any necessary recalibrations or repairs. Driving with a malfunctioning AFS system can reduce your visibility and potentially affect other integrated safety features.
