Vehicle: 2022 Lexus NX 350h F Sport Handling

Hello, I'm getting a 'Blind Spot Monitor System Malfunction' and 'Rear Cross-Traffic Alert System Malfunction' warning light on my 2022 Lexus NX 350h, F Sport Handling trim. It just popped up yesterday and won't go away. The systems are completely disabled.

I've checked the rear bumper area for any obvious damage or dirt, but everything looks clear. It's a relatively new car, so I'm surprised to see this. Has anyone else with a newer NX experienced this, and what was the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) systems are crucial safety features, and a malfunction warning should be addressed promptly. Here's what could be happening with your 2022 Lexus NX 350h:

  1. Sensor Obstruction or Damage: Even if you don't see obvious damage, the radar sensors for BSM/RCTA are located behind the rear bumper cover. A minor bump, even one that doesn't visibly damage the bumper, could misalign or damage a sensor. Dirt, ice, or heavy snow can also temporarily block the sensors, though you mentioned checking this.
  2. Wiring Issues: A loose or corroded connection to the BSM radar units or the main control module could trigger the warning. This is less common on newer vehicles but can happen.
  3. Module Malfunction: The BSM/RCTA system relies on dedicated radar sensors and a control module. A fault within one of these electronic components can cause the system to fail. This might trigger specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the BSM system, such as B2201 (BSM Sensor Malfunction) or similar manufacturer-specific codes.
  4. Calibration Issues: After a repair or even a minor impact, the BSM sensors may require recalibration. If they are not precisely aligned, the system will not function correctly and will display a warning.
  5. Software Glitch: Less likely for a persistent warning, but a temporary software bug could cause the system to fault. Try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes to perform a hard reset, then reconnect and see if the warning clears.

When to See a Shop: Given that this is a newer vehicle and a safety system, it's highly recommended to take your 2022 NX 350h to a Lexus dealership as soon as possible. They have the specialized diagnostic equipment (Techstream) to read specific BSM/RCTA system codes, pinpoint the exact sensor or module that's malfunctioning, and perform any necessary recalibrations or replacements. Attempting to diagnose or repair these complex sensor systems yourself without the proper tools can be difficult and may lead to further issues or incorrect operation of the safety features.
