Vehicle: 2023 Lexus GX 460 Premium

Hello Lexus owners,

I recently purchased a brand new 2023 Lexus GX 460 Premium, and I'm absolutely loving it, except for one thing: I'm hearing some strange noises from the rear suspension. It's a mix of clunking and squeaking, especially noticeable when going over speed bumps, uneven pavement, or even just turning into my driveway.

The noise seems to be coming from the rear passenger side. I only have about 3,000 miles on the vehicle, so this is quite concerning for a new car. I know the GX 460 has Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) and sometimes air suspension components. Could this be related to either of those systems? Has anyone with a newer GX 460 experienced similar noises?

It's definitely concerning to hear clunking and squeaking from the rear suspension of a brand new 2023 Lexus GX 460. While the GX is known for its robust build, new vehicle issues can occur. Here's what might be causing the noise and what steps to take:

  1. Common Suspects in GX 460 Suspension Noise:

    • KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System): The KDSS system, which uses hydraulic cylinders to control sway bars, can sometimes be a source of noise. Issues can arise from low hydraulic fluid, air in the system, or worn bushings/mounts. A clunking noise, especially over uneven terrain, can sometimes be attributed to KDSS components.
    • Sway Bar Bushings/End Links: Even on a new vehicle, a manufacturing defect or improper torque on sway bar bushings or end links can lead to squeaking or clunking. These are common wear items, but shouldn't be an issue at 3,000 miles unless there's a defect.
    • Air Suspension Components (if equipped): If your Premium trim includes rear air suspension, issues with the air springs, height sensors, or the compressor can manifest as noises. However, clunking is less typical for air springs themselves, unless a mounting point is loose.
    • Loose Components: Sometimes, a simple loose bolt on a shock absorber, control arm, or even exhaust hangers can cause unexpected noises.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Action: Since your GX 460 is brand new and under warranty, you should take it to a Lexus dealership immediately. Do not attempt to diagnose or fix this yourself, as it could void parts of your warranty.
    • Dealership Diagnosis: Explain the noises precisely: when they occur (speed bumps, turns, specific side of the vehicle), and the type of noise (clunk, squeak, rattle). The technicians will perform a thorough inspection of the entire rear suspension, including the KDSS components, sway bar links, bushings, shocks, and any air suspension elements. They will check for loose bolts, worn components, or any signs of hydraulic leaks in the KDSS system. They will also check for any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that might address known noise issues for your model year.
