Vehicle: 2019 Lexus NX 300 F Sport

Hi everyone,

I've been experiencing an intermittent problem with my 2019 Lexus NX 300 F Sport. The ABS and TRAC (Traction Control) warning lights, and sometimes the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) light, will randomly illuminate on the dash while I'm driving. They usually stay on for a while, then sometimes turn off on their own after restarting the car or after a period of driving.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it – it happens on highways, city streets, and in different weather conditions. I haven't noticed any immediate changes in braking performance when the lights are on, but it's definitely unsettling. The car has about 60,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else had this issue with their NX? What could be causing these lights to come on?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent illumination of the ABS, TRAC, and VSC lights on your 2019 Lexus NX 300 F Sport is a common indicator of an issue within the wheel speed sensor system or the ABS control module. These systems are interconnected, and a fault in one often triggers warnings for the others.

Common Causes:

  • Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor becomes dirty, damaged, or fails, it sends inconsistent or no data to the ABS/VSC computer, leading to these warning lights. This is the most frequent cause.
  • Damaged Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring: The wiring harness connecting the sensor to the main computer can get damaged, frayed, or corroded, leading to intermittent signals.
  • Dirty or Damaged Tone Ring: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's dirty, corroded, or damaged (e.g., from road debris), it can cause incorrect readings.
  • Low Brake Fluid (less common for these specific lights): While low fluid usually triggers the brake warning light, extreme low levels can sometimes affect system performance.
  • ABS Control Module Malfunction: In rarer cases, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is typically a more expensive repair.

Potential OBD Codes:

When these lights come on, the vehicle's computer usually stores specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the wheel speed sensors. Common codes include:

  • C0031 - C0035: These codes typically indicate a fault with a specific wheel speed sensor (e.g., C0031 for Front Left, C0032 for Front Right, etc.).
  • C0200 - C0215: Codes related to ABS system communication or internal faults.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Visual Inspection: If you're comfortable, inspect the wheel speed sensors and their wiring at each wheel for any obvious damage, dirt, or corrosion. They are usually located near the brake calipers.

When to See a Shop:

Since the issue is intermittent and involves critical safety systems, it's best to have your Lexus NX 300 F Sport professionally diagnosed. A technician will use an OBD-II scanner to retrieve the stored trouble codes, which will pinpoint the exact wheel speed sensor or area of concern. They can then test the sensor's output, inspect the wiring, and check the tone ring. While the car might seem to drive normally, a malfunctioning ABS/TRAC system can compromise your vehicle's safety in emergency braking or slippery conditions, so prompt attention is recommended.
