Vehicle: 2022 Lexus GX 460 Premium

Hello Lexus community,

I'm having an issue with my 2022 Lexus GX 460 Premium. This morning, both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control (TRAC OFF) light illuminated on my dashboard. There was no specific event that triggered it – no hard braking, no hitting a pothole, just came on during my commute.

The brakes feel normal, and I haven't noticed any difference in driving, but having these lights on is concerning. I tried turning the car off and on again, but they remain lit. I'm thinking it might be a wheel speed sensor, but I'm not sure. I don't have an OBD scanner myself.

Has anyone else experienced this with their newer GX 460? What was the solution?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control (TRAC OFF) lights illuminate simultaneously, it almost always indicates an issue within the vehicle's anti-lock braking system or its related sensors. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor fails, sends an erratic signal, or becomes dirty/damaged, the ABS and Traction Control systems lose critical data, triggering these warning lights. Common OBD-II codes associated with this are C0031 (Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor), C0032 (Front Right), C0033 (Rear Left), C0034 (Rear Right).
    • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair.
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors to the wheel speed sensors or ABS module can also cause these lights to come on.
    • Low Brake Fluid: While less common for both lights, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger ABS warnings.
  2. Diagnostics:

    • The first and most crucial step is to connect an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS-specific codes. Generic scanners might only read powertrain codes, so ensure it's an advanced scanner or take it to a shop.
    • The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will pinpoint the specific sensor or circuit that is malfunctioning.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • You should schedule an appointment with a qualified mechanic or Lexus dealership as soon as possible. While your regular brakes may still function, the ABS and Traction Control systems are disabled when these lights are on. This means you won't have anti-lock braking in an emergency stop, and your vehicle won't prevent wheel spin under acceleration or cornering.
    • Driving without these safety features can be risky, especially in adverse weather conditions. A professional can quickly diagnose the exact issue using specialized tools and perform the necessary repair, which often involves replacing a faulty wheel speed sensor.
