Vehicle: 2022 Lexus IS 300 F Sport

Hey Lexus community,

I've got a 2022 Lexus IS 300 F Sport with only about 15,000 miles on it. For the past few weeks, I've been hearing an annoying rattling noise coming from underneath the car, specifically what sounds like the exhaust area. It's most noticeable when I'm idling or at low RPMs, especially when the engine is cold.

The rattle seems to go away once I'm at higher speeds, but it's really prominent when I'm just cruising around town or stopped at a light. It sounds like something loose, but I can't pinpoint it myself. No performance issues or check engine lights, just this irritating noise.

Has anyone with a newer IS 300 experienced a similar exhaust rattle? Any ideas what it could be?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An exhaust rattle on a relatively new 2022 Lexus IS 300 is often a minor issue, but it's best to get it checked to prevent potential damage or worsening noise. Since there are no performance issues or check engine lights, it's likely a mechanical rather than an electronic problem.

Common Causes:

  1. Loose Heat Shield: This is the most frequent cause of exhaust rattles. Heat shields are designed to protect the undercarriage from exhaust heat, and their mounting bolts or clamps can loosen over time, causing them to vibrate against the exhaust pipes.
  2. Broken Exhaust Hanger: The exhaust system is suspended by rubber hangers. If one breaks or becomes detached, a section of the exhaust can sag and rattle against the chassis or other components.
  3. Internal Catalytic Converter Failure: Less common on a new car, but the ceramic matrix inside the catalytic converter can break apart, causing pieces to rattle around. This often sounds like a box of rocks and might eventually trigger a P0420 or P0430 code.
  4. Loose Baffles in Muffler/Resonator: Internal components of the muffler or resonator can sometimes come loose, creating a rattling sound.
  5. Loose Exhaust Clamp or Bolt: Any clamp or bolt connecting exhaust sections could be loose, allowing movement and rattling.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Visual Inspection (Cold Exhaust): When the exhaust is cold, carefully get under the car (or have a shop lift it) and visually inspect the entire exhaust system. Look for loose heat shields, broken hangers, or any signs of contact between the exhaust and the chassis.
  2. Tap Test: Gently tap different sections of the exhaust system with a rubber mallet. This can often help pinpoint the source of the rattle.
  3. Check for Play: Try to manually move different sections of the exhaust to see if there's excessive play or if you can replicate the rattle.

When to See a Shop:

  • Soon: While not an emergency, it's advisable to have a mechanic inspect the exhaust system soon. A loose heat shield can be a simple fix, but if it's an internal catalytic converter issue, it could eventually affect emissions and performance. A professional can safely lift the vehicle and thoroughly inspect the entire system.
