Vehicle: 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Lexus RX 350, F Sport trim, just threw a Check Engine Light this morning. I hooked up my OBD-II scanner, and it's showing a P0171 code: System Too Lean (Bank 1).

The car seems to be running okay, maybe a slight hesitation at idle, but nothing major. Fuel economy might be a bit worse than usual, but it's hard to tell definitively after just a day.

I've read that this can be a few different things. What are the most common culprits for a P0171 on these Lexus models? Is this something I can troubleshoot myself, or should I just take it straight to the dealer or an independent shop? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0171 code, 'System Too Lean (Bank 1),' indicates that the engine's computer (ECU) is detecting too much air or not enough fuel in the exhaust gases for the first bank of cylinders. This often means the air-fuel mixture is imbalanced.

Here are the most common causes and steps for diagnosis:

  1. Vacuum Leaks: This is a very frequent cause. Check all vacuum hoses, intake manifold gaskets, PCV valve and hose, and the brake booster hose for cracks, disconnections, or leaks. A simple way to check for large leaks is to listen for a hissing sound or spray a small amount of unlit propane/carb cleaner around suspected areas (engine RPM will momentarily increase if a leak is present – exercise extreme caution with flammable sprays).
  2. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A dirty or faulty MAF sensor can send incorrect air intake readings to the ECU, leading to an incorrect fuel calculation. Try cleaning the MAF sensor with a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner. Do NOT use other cleaners.
  3. Oxygen (O2) Sensor: A failing upstream (pre-catalytic converter) O2 sensor on Bank 1 could be providing inaccurate readings, causing the ECU to incorrectly adjust the fuel trim. While less common as a primary cause for P0171, it's worth considering if other checks yield nothing.
  4. Fuel Delivery Issues:
    • Clogged Fuel Injectors: One or more injectors on Bank 1 might be partially clogged, not delivering enough fuel.
    • Weak Fuel Pump: Insufficient fuel pressure can lead to a lean condition across the board, though P0171 specifically points to Bank 1.
    • Clogged Fuel Filter: While less common on newer vehicles with long-life filters, it's a possibility.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked for obvious vacuum leaks and cleaned the MAF sensor without success, or if you're uncomfortable performing these diagnostics yourself, it's best to take your 2018 Lexus RX 350 to a qualified mechanic. They have specialized diagnostic tools to monitor live data (fuel trims, O2 sensor readings, MAF sensor output) which can quickly pinpoint the exact cause of the lean condition. Prolonged driving with a lean condition can lead to engine damage, especially to the catalytic converter, due to excessive heat. Addressing it promptly is important for your vehicle's longevity and performance.
