Vehicle: 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport

Hey everyone, I've been noticing a really annoying clunking sound coming from the front end of my 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport lately. It happens mostly when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement, especially at lower speeds.

It sounds like something is loose, almost like a metal-on-metal clunk, but not a grinding noise. I had the tires rotated recently, and they said everything looked fine, but this noise has persisted for a few weeks now and seems to be getting a bit worse.

Has anyone else experienced this with their RX? What could be causing it? I'm hoping it's not something major.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension is a common complaint and can stem from several issues. Given your 2018 Lexus RX 350 F Sport, here's what typically causes such a sound:

Common Causes:

  • Worn Sway Bar Links: These connect the sway bar to the suspension. If the bushings or ball joints wear out, they can create a clunking noise, especially over bumps or when turning.
  • Degraded Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the chassis. Their rubber bushings can crack and deteriorate over time, leading to play and noise.
  • Loose or Worn Strut Mounts: The top mount of your strut assembly can wear out, causing the strut to move excessively and produce a clunking sound.
  • Worn Ball Joints: While less common on newer vehicles, worn lower ball joints can also cause clunking.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Visual Inspection: If you're comfortable, safely lift the front of the vehicle and visually inspect the sway bar links, control arm bushings, and strut mounts for any signs of wear, tears, or looseness.
  2. Shake Test: With the wheel off the ground, try to shake the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and then 3 and 9 o'clock positions to check for play in ball joints or tie rod ends.

When to See a Shop:

If the noise is persistent or worsening, it's best to have a professional technician diagnose the issue. Suspension components are critical for safety and handling. A shop can perform a thorough inspection, identify the exact worn part, and replace it. Ignoring suspension noises can lead to accelerated wear on other components and potentially compromise vehicle control. Early diagnosis can prevent more costly repairs down the line.
