Vehicle: 2020 Lexus ES 350 Luxury

Hi everyone,

I've been noticing some concerning behavior from the transmission in my 2020 Lexus ES 350 Luxury. When accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds, there's a noticeable hesitation before the car really gets going. It feels like it's struggling to find the right gear.

Additionally, I've experienced some rougher shifts than I'd expect from a Lexus, particularly between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes downshifting. It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently now.

My car has about 45,000 miles on it. Is this normal for the 8-speed automatic transmission in the ES 350, or should I be worried? Has anyone else encountered this with their 2020 ES 350? Any advice on what to check or mention to the dealer?

Transmission hesitation and rough shifts in a 2020 Lexus ES 350 can be concerning, but there are several potential causes, ranging from minor to more significant:

  1. Transmission Fluid Level/Quality: Low or degraded transmission fluid can lead to poor shifting performance. While many modern transmissions are 'sealed for life,' checking the fluid level and condition (if accessible) is a good first step. However, this often requires specialized tools and knowledge.
  2. Adaptive Learning: Modern transmissions have adaptive learning capabilities, meaning they adjust shift points based on driving style. If there's been a significant change in driving habits or if the adaptive memory needs to be reset, it could cause temporary rough shifts. A dealership can perform a transmission reset.
  3. Software Glitches: Similar to infotainment, transmission control modules (TCM) can have software bugs. Lexus may have released software updates or TSBs to address known shifting issues for your model year.
  4. Solenoid Issues: Solenoids within the transmission control the flow of fluid to engage gears. A faulty or sticking solenoid can cause delayed or harsh shifts.
  5. Torque Converter Problems: Less common, but a failing torque converter can cause shuddering or hesitation, especially during acceleration.

OBD Codes to Look For: If your Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminates, common transmission-related codes include:

  • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction
  • P0731 - P0736: Incorrect Gear Ratio for specific gears
  • P0740: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction

When to See a Shop:

  • If the problem is consistent and worsening.
  • If the Check Engine Light or a transmission warning light comes on.
  • If you notice any strange noises or burning smells.

It's highly recommended to have a qualified Lexus technician diagnose the issue. They can perform a comprehensive scan for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), check transmission fluid parameters, and assess for any relevant TSBs or recalls. Addressing transmission issues promptly can prevent more extensive and costly repairs down the line.
