Vehicle: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing some concerning issues with the transmission in my 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve. Lately, it's been shifting very roughly, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes it feels like it hesitates before engaging a gear, particularly when accelerating from a stop or at low speeds. It's not a smooth transition like it used to be.

Yesterday, the check engine light came on, and I'm worried this might be a serious transmission problem. I haven't noticed any leaks, and the fluid level (as far as I can tell) seems okay, but I'm not a mechanic. Has anyone else with a 2020-2026 Aviator or similar Lincoln model experienced this?

Any advice on what this could be or what I should check before taking it to the dealer would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping it's something minor, but the rough shifts are definitely noticeable and concerning.

It sounds like you're dealing with a common concern for many modern vehicles equipped with advanced multi-speed transmissions. Rough shifting and hesitation, especially when accompanied by a Check Engine Light (CEL), almost always indicate an issue that needs professional attention.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and recommended steps:

  1. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

    • The first and most crucial step is to get the vehicle scanned for codes. A P0700 code (Transmission Control System Malfunction) is a general indicator, but more specific codes like P0731 (Incorrect Gear Ratio - 1st Gear) or P0729 (Incorrect Gear Ratio - 6th Gear) could pinpoint the exact issue. Other codes might relate to solenoid performance (P0750 series) or transmission fluid pressure.
  2. Common Causes for 10-Speed Transmission Issues:

    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Even if it looks okay, incorrect fluid type or contamination can cause problems. Modern transmissions are very sensitive to fluid quality and level.
    • Transmission Control Module (TCM) Glitch: Software bugs or a faulty TCM can lead to incorrect shift commands.
    • Solenoid Issues: The solenoids control fluid flow to engage gears. A sticking or failing solenoid can cause rough shifts or hesitation.
    • Valve Body Problems: The valve body directs transmission fluid to the clutches and bands. Wear or blockages can disrupt proper shifting.
    • Internal Mechanical Wear: While less common on newer vehicles, worn clutch packs or other internal components can cause these symptoms.
    • Adaptive Learning Issues: Sometimes, the transmission's adaptive learning can get 'confused' and needs to be reset, though this usually doesn't trigger a CEL unless there's an underlying fault.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: If the CEL is flashing, this indicates a severe problem that could cause further damage if ignored. Continuing to drive with a flashing CEL is not recommended.
    • As Soon as Possible: Even if the CEL is solid, rough shifting and hesitation can worsen and lead to more expensive repairs. A Lincoln dealership or a reputable transmission specialist is your best bet. They have the specific diagnostic tools and expertise for these complex transmissions.

Do not attempt to flush the transmission fluid yourself unless you are certain of the procedure and fluid type. Incorrect fluid can cause significant damage. Get those codes read first, as they will provide the most direct path to diagnosis.
