Vehicle: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve

Hey everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with the infotainment system in my 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve. Lately, the screen has been freezing up completely, becoming unresponsive to touch, or occasionally just going totally black. It's really frustrating, especially when I'm trying to use navigation or Apple CarPlay.

Sometimes, turning the car off and letting it sit for a few minutes, then restarting, will temporarily fix it. But the problem always comes back, and it seems to be happening more and more frequently now. Apple CarPlay also randomly disconnects, even when the screen isn't frozen.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Aviator or another Lincoln model? I'm wondering if it's a software glitch or something more serious with the hardware. Any advice before I take it to the dealership would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like you're dealing with a common issue related to the SYNC 3 infotainment system, which can manifest as freezing, unresponsiveness, or a black screen. Here are some steps and potential causes:

  1. Perform a Master Reset:
    • Go to Settings > General > Master Reset. This will erase personal data and restore the system to factory defaults. It can often resolve software glitches.
  2. Check for Software Updates:
    • Connect your vehicle to Wi-Fi or visit the Ford/Lincoln owner website to check for available SYNC 3 software updates. Outdated software can lead to instability.
  3. Battery Disconnect (Briefly):
    • If the master reset doesn't work, try disconnecting the negative terminal of your 12V battery for about 15-30 minutes. This can sometimes hard-reset electronic modules, including the infotainment system. Ensure your vehicle is off and parked safely before attempting this.

Potential Causes:

  • Software Glitch: The most common cause, often resolved by a master reset or software update.
  • APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) Failure: The APIM is the brain of your infotainment system. If it's failing, it can cause intermittent or complete system malfunctions. This is a hardware issue.
  • Loose Wiring/Connection: Less common, but a loose connection to the APIM or screen could cause intermittent issues.

When to See a Shop:

If the problem persists after trying the master reset and checking for updates, it's time to visit a Lincoln dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools that can communicate directly with the APIM and other modules. They can check for specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that might not trigger a check engine light but are stored in the system. Common codes related to APIM issues include:

  • U0159: Lost Communication with A/C Control Module (often related to APIM issues)
  • U0253: Lost Communication with Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM)
  • B1A84: APIM Internal Fault

These codes would point towards a failing APIM, which would likely require replacement. Your vehicle may still be under warranty, so check with your dealer.
