Vehicle: 2021 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring

Hello everyone,

I've got a 2021 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring with about 40,000 miles. Lately, I've noticed a distinct pull to the right while driving straight, and I constantly have to correct the steering. I also just checked my tires, and the front right tire seems to be wearing much faster on the outer edge than the others.

I haven't hit any major potholes or had any accidents. Could this be an alignment issue, or something more serious with the suspension? What should I be looking for?

The symptoms you're describing – a vehicle pulling to one side and uneven tire wear – are classic indicators of an alignment issue or worn steering/suspension components on your 2021 Lincoln Aviator.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes:

  1. Wheel Alignment: This is the most common cause. Your vehicle's wheel alignment refers to the angles of the wheels relative to each other and the road. Hitting curbs, potholes, or even general wear can knock these angles out of specification, causing pulling and uneven tire wear (e.g., outer edge wear often points to excessive positive camber or toe-in).
  2. Worn Suspension Components:
    • Ball Joints: Worn or loose ball joints can cause play in the suspension, leading to alignment issues and pulling.
    • Control Arm Bushings: Degraded bushings can allow excessive movement of the control arm, affecting wheel alignment.
    • Tie Rod Ends: Worn inner or outer tie rod ends can introduce play in the steering, leading to wandering and pulling.
  3. Tire Issues: While less likely to be the primary cause of pulling and specific uneven wear, a significantly underinflated tire or a damaged tire (e.g., internal belt separation) could contribute to pulling. However, the specific outer edge wear points more strongly to alignment.
  4. Brake Drag: A sticking brake caliper could cause a slight drag on one wheel, leading to a pull. However, this usually comes with other symptoms like heat from the wheel or a burning smell.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediate Action: Address this promptly. Uneven tire wear significantly shortens tire life, and a vehicle pulling can compromise safety and handling.
  • Professional Inspection and Alignment: Take your Aviator to a reputable shop for a full suspension inspection and a four-wheel alignment. They will check all suspension and steering components for wear or damage before performing the alignment. If any worn components are found, they should be replaced before the alignment is done to ensure the alignment holds.
  • Tire Rotation/Replacement: Depending on the severity of the wear on your front right tire, it might need to be replaced. Even if not replaced, a rotation might be recommended after the alignment to help even out wear on the remaining tires.
