Vehicle: 2022 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring PHEV

Hi everyone,

My 2022 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring (PHEV) suddenly has the ABS and Traction Control warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. It happened while I was driving normally on the highway, and there wasn't any noticeable change in driving feel or braking performance immediately. However, I know these systems are critical for safety.

I tried restarting the car, but the lights came back on. Is this a common issue for the Aviator, especially the PHEV models? What could be causing both lights to come on at the same time? I'm hoping it's something simple like a sensor.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and Traction Control warning lights illuminate simultaneously, it generally indicates a problem affecting the vehicle's wheel speed sensors or the ABS control module. These systems are interconnected, as traction control relies on the same wheel speed data as ABS.

  1. Common Causes for Both Lights:

    • Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS): This is the most common culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one fails, the ABS and Traction Control systems lose critical data, triggering both lights. Damage from road debris, corrosion, or a wiring issue can cause failure.
    • Damaged ABS Tone Ring/Reluctor Ring: These rings are what the WSS reads. If a tone ring is cracked, corroded, or dirty, it can send erratic signals to the ABS module.
    • ABS Control Module Failure: Less common but possible, the main ABS control module (which also manages traction control) could be faulty.
    • Low Brake Fluid Level: While less likely to trigger both simultaneously without a brake warning light, extremely low fluid can sometimes affect braking system performance and related warnings.
    • Wiring/Connector Issues: Damaged wiring or loose connectors to any of the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can interrupt communication.
  2. Initial Steps:

    • Visual Inspection: If safe, visually inspect the area around each wheel for any obvious damage to sensor wires or the sensors themselves. Check for any debris caught around the brake rotors or calipers.
    • Check Brake Fluid: Verify that your brake fluid reservoir is at the appropriate level.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Professional Scan: Since these are safety systems, it's highly recommended to have a professional diagnostic scan performed as soon as possible. A standard OBD-II scanner often won't read ABS-specific codes. A professional-grade scanner can access the ABS module and pinpoint exactly which wheel speed sensor or other component is reporting an issue.
    • Safety Concern: While your brakes may feel normal, the ABS and Traction Control systems are disabled when these lights are on. This means your vehicle will not have the benefit of anti-lock braking or traction assistance in emergency braking or slippery conditions.
    • PHEV Specifics: For PHEV models, while the core ABS/Traction Control logic is similar, the integration with regenerative braking systems means that any issues could potentially have broader implications for the braking system's overall function. A Lincoln dealership or specialist familiar with PHEV systems would be ideal for diagnosis.
